CinemaCon Roundup: Fast & Furious 7, Pitch Perfect Sequel, Star Wars Plans18.04.13 # Sequel # 2 Comments
CinemaCon, the convention for cinema owners, has been happening and with it studios have been popping up to showcase footage and make announcements.
Universal not only revealed clips from their upcoming Fast & Furious 6 (to industry only), but also announced that a seventh (SEVENTH) instalment would be produced and released next year. Star and producer Vin Diesel stated the next F&F title will be “the biggest one of all”, and it’ll be directed by James Wan (Insidious, Saw).
The studio also revealed that they would be producing a sequel to last year’s sleeper hit Pitch Perfect, which starred Anna Kendrick and Rebel Wilson. The comedy, about the trials and tribulations of an all-girl acapella group, grossed over $100 million dollars versus its relatively small $17 million budget.
It’s been a strong twelve months for Universal, the likes of American Reunion, Ted, The Bourne Legacy and Les Miserables have all been commercially successful. Even Snow White and The Huntsman managed to rake in almost $400 million altogether. While no release date has been set for the Pitch Perfect sequel, Fast & Furious 7 is set for 11th July 2014, roughly 13 years after the original film.
Meanwhile, Disney announced firmed up Star Wars plans, revealing that between 2015 and 2019 there will be a Star Wars movie every summer. 2015, 2017, 2019 will be Episodes 7, 8 and 9, while 2016 and 2018 will be standalone movies. That’s a lot of wars in the stars.
