Sony Announces The Amazing Spider-Man 3 & 4

spidey

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is swinging towards a May 2, 2014 release, but Sony is already thinking about Peter Parker’s future beyond that, marking two further movies in the calendar.

Clearly confident in the Spidey franchise (or just wanting to play things safe by locking everything down early), Sony has announced that third Spider-Man movie will arrive on June 10, 2016 while the fourth outing will touch down on May 4, 2018.

Sony’s marketing boss Jeff Blake said in a statement: “Spider-Man is our most important, most successful, and most beloved franchise, so we’re thrilled that we are in a position to lock in these prime release dates over the next five years.”

While we have no idea of what might be happening in these movies, or who might be appearing in them, we at least know that they’re solidly in the pipeline.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 will see Andrew Garfield reprise of Peter Parker/Spiderman, who will be taking on Jamie Foxx as Electro and Paul Giamatti as Rhino. Emma Stone will be returning as Gwen Stacy while Shailene Woodley joins as Mary Jane Watson. Like its predecessor, the film is directed by Marc Webb.

The first one was OK till that scene (spoilers) where the construction guys line up the cranes for Spidey in a soppy feel good moment. Every Spiderman movie has been ruined by these scenes of overused sentimentality where the city goes ‘Thank you Spiderman’.
And then there’s always Uncle Ben with the over simplistic and over done mentor role. It’s like they tried to morph Mr Miyagi, Yoda and Smokey the Bear into the soul of an average middle class father figure.

That’s a great description. With a sprinkling of The West Wing?

These sequel announcements at this stage are pretty meaningless I think. If Amazing Spider-Man 2 doesn’t do well, they’ll be cancelled. It’s just about building hype for the second movie “Look how great we think it’s turning out!”.
