Man Of Steel 2 – Sequel Plans26.06.13 # Sequel # 10 Comments
It’s been a big fortnight for the Superman franchise. So is there going to be a Man of Steel 2? And what can we expect from it?
The box office numbers for Man of Steel have so far been massive – $200 million worldwide in the first four days. But word that Warner Bros. was planning to fast track a sequel hit got out before the movie opened, with reports that it was aiming to get the next film out as early as 2014. That’s obviously quite an ambitious target and has been met with a fair bit of skepticism, but it’s not impossible if production on the film starts in the next six months.
And with Goyer reportedly working on the first draft of the second movie’s script right now, it could very well happen. However, while Zack Snyder and David Goyer are said to be returning, Christopher Nolan isn’t a certain, and considering that he’s about to start work on his next movie, Interstellar, we can see why he may not reclaim the producer role for the next film.
But what can we tell from Man of Steel itself about the potential direction of the franchise? Well there was a big hint as to which criminal genius might be turning up next when the Lexcorp logo came into view a couple of times in the movie (points for noticing the Lexcorp building in particular), and Lex Luthor certainly makes sense for the next Superman adversary.
And who will take the role of Superman’s best-know enemy? Well insiders close to the production have reportedly claimed that Snyder and Warner Bros. want Mark Strong for the part, though we’re yet to hear if the studio has made any him any sort of offer yet. Of course, Strong knows the role of the comic book villain all too well, having played Sinestro in Green Lantern, and Frank D’Amico in Kick-Ass. It’s expected that Henry Cavill will return as Clark Kent, even though he recently told ABC News that he has “no idea” whether another Superman movie is in the pipeline.
As for storyline, there’s a wealth of material that could be drawn on. A perfect example of source material would be the second half of Superman: Birth Right, which focuses on Lex Luthor and the destruction of Krypton.
We may even see Bruce Wayne show his face in there somewhere. There’s been a lot of talk about how Man Of Steel could help build the DC Universe into a Justice League movie, much like Marvel did with The Avengers, and Goyer has said that Snyder considers Superman’s universe to be the same as Batman’s.
“It would be disingenuous to say Warner Bros doesn’t hope that this would be the starting point for a shared universe,” he said. “And Zack has said that Bruce Wayne exists in this universe. It would be a different Bruce Wayne from Chris’s [Nolan] Dark Knight trilogy, and it would be disingenuous to say that Zack and I haven’t had various conversations on set, around ‘what if’ and ‘moving forward’.”
It wouldn’t be surprising if we saw Batman appear again before the Justice League movie then. Some other Justice League talk also came paired with the rumours of a 2014 release for Man Of Steel 2, with the same sources also saying that the could arrive as early as 2015.
Warner’s president of domestic distribution Dan Fellman even had something to say on the matter. “It’s more than just a franchise for us, it really opens up the door to do combinations of the DC Comics characters,” he said. “We can build them up like Marvel did and benefit from the history of DC.”
What would you like to see happen in a Man of Steel 2? Who should the villains be? Which other members of the Justice League should be involved? Leave your thoughts in the comments.
