Joss Whedon Attacks Empire Strikes Back, Supports Ben Affleck As Batman24.08.13 # News # One Comment
Joss Whedon has said he believes Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strike Back has an “appalling” ending.
Despite it being more than three decades since the movie’s release, Whedon has come out to say he believes audiences were cheated out of a full movie experience by The Empire Strikes Back.
“Empire committed the cardinal sin of not actually ending, which at the time I was appalled by and I still think it was a terrible idea,” he said.
“It’s not an ending. It’s a Come Back Next Week, or in three years. And that upsets me. I go to movies expecting to have a whole experience. If I want a movie that doesn’t end I’ll go to a French movie. That’s a betrayal of trust to me. A movie has to be complete within itself, it can’t just build off the first one or play variations.”
Despite this, Whedon is still a big fan of the classic sequel. And the director did have some more positive words this week, following news that Ben Affleck will play Batman in Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel sequel.
He said in a tweet: “Affleck’ll crush it. He’s got the chops, he’s got the chin — just needs the material. Affleck & Cavill toe to toe — I’m in.”
Looks like the DC/Marvel rivalry isn’t quite as heated as we all thought. Unless this is all part of Whedon’s evil plan to sabotage the DC universe…
Whedon is currently working on The Avengers: Age of Ultron, which is set for release in 2015.
