20 Best Horror Movies On Netflix – Streaming Tonight

14. The Strangers (2008)

A young couple (Liv Tyler, Scott Speedman) staying in an isolated vacation home are terrorized by three unknown assailants. Home invasion done right. There’s aren’t many more frightening scenarios than that.

13. The Mist (2007)

A thick mist filled with bloodthirsty creatures from another dimension spreads over a small town. When a band of residents hole up in the supermarket to fight for their lives, the conflict between them soon turns as deadly and the threat outside. Solid adaptation of Stephen King’s novella with some truly memorable and horrifying imagery. It’s an extremely downbeat film and we can debate whether the ending works (I don’t think it was well enough executed), but it’s certainly worth your time.

12. Drag Me To Hell (2009)

On the brink of burnout after spending the entire millennium helming increasingly large and increasingly unwieldy Spider-Man movies, Sam Raimi took a well-earned break with this – and promptly rediscovered the sense of bloody fun and flair for slapstick schlock which characterised his Evil Dead trilogy. Alison Lohman stars as the career girl clobbered with a gypsy curse by the old crone she turns down for a loan, while Raimi toys with her (and his audience’s sympathies) as he gleefully subjects her to a procession of darkly comic torments.

11. Tucker & Dale vs Evil (2010)

Tucker and Dale are best friends on vacation at their dilapidated mountain house, when they are mistaken for murderous backwoods hillbillies by a group of obnoxious, preppy college kids. After one of the students gets separated from her friends, the boys try to lend a hand, but as the misunderstanding grows, so does the body count. This is a gory, good-spirited horror-comedy that cleverly flips the many cliches of the killer redneck movie. Tucker and Dale are both wonderfully played. The college kids overact a bit, but it’s a most enjoyable ride.

10. Day Of The Dead (1985)

Best Horror Movies Netflix
George A. Romero’s most underrated movie, and his own personal favourite. Essentially it takes a boiled-down version of society and observes how ego and a lack of human communication leads to disaster. It’s blinkered scientist vs brutal military captain, with everyone else stuck in the middle. And in Capt. Rhodes (above) it features one of the most magnificent shouty bastards ever to grace the screen. Day also has the most realistic zombie gore fx yet, thanks to an absence of cgi and Tom Savini at the height of his powers.

9. Identity (2003)

On a dark and stormy night ten strangers take refuge in an isolated Nevada motel when a rainstorm turns into a monsoon. One by one they begin to be killed off… but by who and for what reason? Director James Mangold (‘3:10 to Yuma’, ‘Cop Land’) imbues proceedings with terrific atmosphere, and the ensemble cast brims with strong acting talent from John Cusack and Ray Liotta to John Hawkes and Amanda Peet. The twist is quite jarring first time round given how unusual it is, but on second viewing it’s clear what a carefully constructed screenplay it is from beginning to end, based on a brilliantly original concept.

8. Carrie (1976)

The first Stephen King novel and the first to be adapted into a feature film, to much critical acclaim. Sissy Spacek plays the socially outcast girl who discovers her telekinetic powers after going through puberty. When the teasing from her peers, including John Travolta, gets too much she snaps and goes on a murderous rampage. Personally if I was the prankster at her prom I wouldn’t have chosen a bucket of blood, it’s low on laughs. A good wedgie would have done it.

Thanks for the heads up. It’s available in the UK but not the US. To avoid confusion I’ve now split the US Netflix and the UK Netflix into two different lists.

Horror is my favorite genre, whenever a new one comes out I go to the cinema to see it. Although the old horror movies on Netflix are much better than the new.
