The Raid 2: Berandal – Teaser Trailer13.11.13 # Trailers # 4 Comments
Teaser trailers are tricky. They’re all about managing expectations, presenting the viewing public with their first precious glimpse of the finished product while not giving away anything too important. On that level, the teaser trailer for The Raid 2: Berandal is one of the best I can remember seeing.
The original film, The Raid: Redemption, is widely regarded as one of the best martial arts films in recent years. John Woo meets Bruce Lee, with just a touch of Die Hard – an elite police unit perform a sweep of a crime-infested tower block – it put both director Gareth Evans and star Iko Uwais on the map.
The difficulty surrounding teasers is only elevated when there’s expectation surrounding the film, especially when it’s the sequel to a breakout success. The opening shot here, however, that of the chalk outline of a man scored on a prison wall, is truly intriguing; as a figure for Rama’s (Uwais) boxing practice, it proves central to the whole trailer.
What we know of The Raid 2 so far, based on official sources, is that it involves Rama, the former rookie, going undercover with a Jakarta crime syndicate, trying to uncover police corruption. How exactly he ends up in prison remains unknown, but, based on this, suffice to say it’ll involve plenty of stylized, almost Refn-esque violence.
As Uwais’ blows beat a staccato rhythm, quickly building tension, shots of indolent mobsters and smoothly choreographed brutality – a shockingly casual execution on an escalator, for instance – it’s believable that Rama might burst through that wall and break out at any moment. Ultimately, though, all he leaves behind is a bloody handprint.
I guess this is a situation that Rama can’t simply punch his way out of. Whether or not it can meet with expectations, The Raid 2: Berandal is due out in the USA in March of next year.
