Gone Girl Review (Midnight Movie Madness)

The acclaimed director of Madonna’s Vogue is back with his 10th feature. Is Gone Girl as good as Fincher’s previous work or a colossal disappointment?

So continues my Midnight Movie Madness video series here on Movie-Moron, where I’m breaking down the latest releases with a look at their background, and my take on whether they’re any good:

Gone Girl is out now in the US and UK.

Really excited to see this now. Ben Affleck, Neil Patrick Harris and Tyler Perry was a risky dramatic cast.

I here hear good things about Tyler Perry and Ben Affleck is a good actor.
Not sold on the cinematography. Digital green tinged color bleaching and gloom is not good cinematography. It’s a pop video shortcut that suggest “dark themes” in the same way orange and teal is said to make things pop . If you go back to films like The American Friend, Barry Lyndon, Apocalypse Now or even Halloween that’s good cinematography. Wes Anderson’s stuff always looks good. Affleck’s own movies actually look better than Ficher’s films. Also The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo trilogy already exists It doesn’t really need remaking with people putting on comedy accents and the political bite removed. However, Fincher is a good director and this looks like one of his better films.

Tyler Perry was apparently pretty bad in his only significant thriller role, Alex Cross.

I agree, Fincher’s cinematography is often too over the top shadowy for my taste. Ok, the whole noir thing, but it often makes the mood gloomier than it needs to be. The likes of The Game, while being a good movie, just has a depressing air about it which comes down in part to the way it’s lit.
