New: Upcoming Superhero Movies 2015 (List) Blockbuster cinema has become dominated by them. There are at least 30 coming in the next 5 years from Marvel, WB, Fox and Sony. It’s time to lay out all the upcoming superhero movies in 2015 and beyond, all the way up to 2020. While many childhood dreams are coming true over the next few years, the genre risks wrecking itself by becoming oversaturated.

Let us know which ones you’re most excited to see in the comments.

Avengers: Age Of Ultron  (May 1st, 2015) (US Dates)
Upcoming Superhero Movies 2015

When Tony Stark tries to jumpstart a dormant peacekeeping program he accidentally creates the sentient robot known as Ultron. Now it’ll take all the Avengers to stop him. Scripted and directed once again by Joss Whedon, this brings back the original ensemble and adds James Spader voicing/part mo-capping Ultron, an A.I. overwhelmed with a god complex and a rage toward his creators who longs to take over the Earth with his own spawn. Whedon says “he is not a creature of logic, he’s genuinely disturbed – everything a robot never is.” Twins Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) and Quicksilver (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) also join the mix, starting off as villains under the control of HYDRA’s Baron von Strucker (Thomas Kretschmann). She has telekinetic abilities, can weave spells and is unhinged. He can move at superhuman speed, has anger-frustration and is fiercely over-protective. Meanwhile Paul Bettany, who voiced J.A.R.V.I.S. in previous films, plays the Vision. Look out for Hulk vs Hulkbuster armour too – and so much more.

Ant-Man  (July 17th, 2015)
2015 Superhero Movies

Armed with a super-suit capable of shrinking in scale but increasing in strength, con-man Scott Lang (Rudd) must embrace his inner hero and help his mentor, Dr. Hank Pym (Douglas), plan and pull off a heist that will save the world. At the same time they must safeguard the mystery of the Ant-Man technology from the likes of Darren Cross / Yellowjacket who looks to acquire Pym’s company and the suit. Before long Cross has a next generation battle version that’s sleeker, more militaristic, and more dangerous… Evangeline Lilly (‘The Hobbit’) plays Hank Pym’s daughter, aka the Wasp. ‘Ant-Man’ was meant to be directed by Edgar Wright, based on the screenplay he’d written with Joe Cornish over many years, however after a falling out with Marvel at the last minute he was replaced by Peyton Reed (‘Yes Man’, ironically enough).

Fantastic Four  (August 7th, 2015)
New Superhero Movies 2015

Four young outsiders teleport to an alternate and dangerous universe which alters their physical form in shocking ways. Their lives irrevocably upended, the team must learn to harness their daunting new abilities and work together to save Earth from a former friend turned enemy… Based somewhat on the Ultimate Fantastic Four comic, this differs from the usual origin – four astronauts who gaining superpowers after cosmic radiation exposure. Producers say it’ll be a more grounded, gritty movie than the previous two, but still with “joyful” moments, and tell a “younger” story than the original movies. Miles Teller (‘Whiplash’) plays Reed Richards, Jamie Bell (‘Billy Elliot’) is Ben Grimm, Kate Mara (‘Transcendence’) plays Sue Storm, Michael B. Jordan (‘Chronicle’) is her brother Johnny Storm, while Reg E. Catchey is their father Dr. Storm. Toby Kebbell (‘RocknRolla’) plays villain Doctor Doom, but this is no Victor Von Doom, instead he’s an iteration named Victor Domashev who’s an “anti-social programmer” and posts under the online handle “Doom.” Hmm. Tim Blake Nelson is scientist/future villain Mole Man, and it’s rumoured that the Doombots will also appear – exact replicas of Doom which he controls. The director of the inventive ‘Chronicle’ teams with the screenwriter of ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’. The casting hasn’t delighted fans (it lacks gravitas), but the franchise is badly in need of a reboot and this creative team has the potential to deliver something interesting.

DEADPOOL  (February 2016)
Upcoming Superhero Films

Deadpool is a mercenary who joins the Mutant X program (the same one that grafted adamantium to Wolverine’s skeleton) after he’s diagnosed with cancer. He’s given accelerated healing powers but the process also leaves him severely scarred and mentally unstable. Now a lethal killer with a motormouth, he’s known for constantly breaking the fourth wall and addressing the viewer directly, leading to tongue-in-cheek mayhem. The movie was stuck in development limbo for years but finally jolted to life when test footage was “accidentally” leaked and it received an enthusiastic fan reaction. Ryan Reynolds is set to continue in the role he begun in ‘X-Men Origins: Wolverine’, having starred in the test footage too. The movie will reportedly reference ‘Origins’ in this, with the real Deadpool unhappy about how he was portrayed. Most fans had hoped for an R-rating to free up the potty mouth and bloody violence, but it’ll be PG-13. Unknown director Tim Miller is at the helm.

Superhero Movies List 2015

Zack Snyder’s ‘Man of Steel’ sequel pits DC’s two biggest names against each other whilst opening the door to the Justice League. Batman (Ben Affleck) will have been operating for a long time and be much like the rough version seen in Frank Miller’s ‘The Dark Knight Returns’ comic. By contrast, Superman (Henry Cavill) is relatively new on the scene. Snyder wants Superman to look up to Batman both mentally and physically (Affleck’s taller). But it seems Batman’s violent methods will be just one point of tension between them that leads to all-out conflict. Jeremy Irons is Alfred and, somewhat controversially, Jesse Eisenberg (‘The Social Network’) plays a modern Lex Luther. Gal Gadot (‘Fast and the Furious’ series) is involved as Wonder Woman, while other Justice League members cameo including Cyborg and Aquaman.

Best Superhero Movies 2015

It’s Captain America vs Iron Man and hero vs hero in a dispute that splits the Marvel universe in two. The conflict in the comics centers around the authorities, backed by Stark, forcing heroes to register and reveal their true identities after a disastrous incident causes civilian death. Cap disagrees on moral grounds, backs freedom, and two warring sides are formed. But since Marvel’s movie characters don’t have secret identities, the dispute here will center mainly on governments of the world wanting to regulate the heroes and virtually control them after the events of ‘Age of Ultron’. Spider-Man’s identity was the central focus of the comic series and there are rumours that Marvel are looking to strike a deal with rights-holder Sony so he can be used here. But if not, it may be Black Panther who takes that central role. The directors of ‘Winter Soldier’ remain in charge. Anthony Mackie, who plays Falcon, has said we’ll be seeing more of him.

I’m with you, on that. I’m looking forward to everything. I want to see them ALL succeed, personally. That way the movie execs want to take chances on even MORE superheroes. Long time (40+ years) comic book fan, here. I was a comic book geek back when it was embarrassing to be caught watching old re-runs of Batman on TV by your friends (Adam West, Adam West…).

They are certainly the most iffy prospects. At the moment I’m inclined to believe the next Spider-Man film will be ‘Spider-Man: Sinister Six’, and put him front and center, despite saying he won’t be much involved. Sony have to make another Spider-Man film after all and the current course isn’t working for them.

Channing Tatum really, really wants to play Gambit, and is a major star now, even though he doesn’t seem like a good fit to me. I think they will introduce him in X-Men: Apocalypse and decide based on the reaction whether to do the standalone.

The actor who plays Cyborg says he was surprised himself by the standalone announcement. I agree I can see things changing between now and 2020.
