Here’s everything we know so far about the sequel of 2009… Transformers 2.
Those who bash the first movie should remember that summertime blockbusters are in large part about spectacle - and Transformers was one of the most visually spectacular for many years. Were there faults? - Of course. Namely subplots that weren’t needed (the hackers), too many human characters, and virtually no interaction between the Decepticons (Starscream had two lines).
It sounds like they’ve taken these criticisms on board for the sequel - Shia LaBoeuf said recently “There’s going to be a lot more characterisation with the robots this time. And there’s going to be new robots on both sides.”
So who’s getting added? According to IESB, one of the confirmed additions is a biggie - The Constructicons.
For those who missed out on their childhood, the Constructicons were six construction vehicles that, when it was called for, united to form one giant robot known as… Devastator.
Fans at Rise Studios have created this modern mock up:

While a foot like that is great for kicking sand in someone’s face, expect the design to be much more integral and complex, like those in first film.
The names of the Constructicons were Scrapper, Long Haul, Hook, Scavenger, Mixmaster, and Bonecrusher. But a couple of changes will have to be made there - the name ‘Bonecrusher’ was already used by the Decepticon in the first film who rollerbladed through a bus, impressed a kid and got beheaded by Optimus Prime. While the name ‘Devastator’ was given to the small tank that got called a “punk” by Jazz, before being seemingly bundled to death by the Autobots.
Another well known addition you can expect for Transformers 2 is… Soundwave. While shooting the first film, producers said he was problematic to design (no one has tape decks any more) but that he would be in the sequel.

Fan Art
Michael Bay has said that the Dinobots will not appear this time around.
On the human side, Shia and Megan Fox are all already signed to return but, according to IESB, expect a number of the original cast to be left by the wayside. Why? Well a casting call has been put out for a whole range of new leading roles:
[CHUCK] 19-25 yrs, Sam’s roommate at Princeton. He runs a conspiracy theory website. Funny in an irreverent, edgy way, he is shocked to see his conspiracy theories come to life. (2nd Lead)
[U.S. MILITARY LEADER] Late 20s/early 30s, African American with a great sense of humor and a tough military presence. (Supporting lead)
[UK SPECIAL FORCES LEADER] British, in his early to mid 30s, smart and capable. Can be Caucasian, Black, East Indian. (Supporting lead)
[GALLOWAY] Early 40s-early 50s, male, National Security Advisor and presidential liaison. A curt man who is tightly wound. (Supporting Lead)
[PROFESSOR COLAN] 40s, Sam’s physics professor at Princeton. He’s a self-satisfied intellectual who compares himself to Einstein, and is arrogant enough to wear leather pants to look cool. (1 Scene)
[THERESA] Early 30s; she’s Sgt. Epps’ wife, has 4 kids, sassy and sexy, good with comedy. Submit African American actresses only.
[MOMMA SIMMONS] This NY Momma is in her late 60s/early 70s. She runs a deli/butcher shop with her son in Brooklyn. Tough and sarcastic. (1 Scene)
[MASSIVE DYNAMICS CEO] 50s, male, this Corporate CEO appears in front of congress to testify. (1 speech/scene)
[TEXAS CONGRESSMAN] 55-65 yrs, on a Congressional Committee investigating the purpose of the “Automated Defensive Initiative” developed by Massive Dynamics.
[FBI DIRECTOR] Mid 50s, male, giving a press release assuring the public they will be safe against attacks. (1 speech/scene)
[CNN REPORTER] Reporting on missile strikes and bombings in various cities. Submit male/female, all ethnicities (1 speech)
…Seems Shia will be at Princeton for this one then, and the presence of the Transformers is nothing more than a conspiracy theory to the wider world.
Shooting gets underway in July this year for a release on June 26th 2009. Peter Cullen, Spielberg, Bay are all both back in the same capacity as before. And the robots are already on the move - both Optimus and Barricade have been spotted in transit around LA.

So how pumped is Shia? “It’s going to be bad-ass. The pre-vizes that I’ve seen… it’s just massive. If the first one was any indicator of how massive massive can be, this is going to blow that out of the water. It’s insane.”

Wonder if it will be as yawn-able as the first one. No, don’t get me wrong, the previews and trailers were great… and so were thsoe scenes in the movie. But even being a childhood fan of the cartoons and toys, I still was unable to buy into the story.
Most people would agree that Trans-1 was anything BUT “yawn-able”. If you were “unable to buy into the story” then you have forgotten one of the most valuable skills learned in childhood, an ability to suspend our disbelief long enough to believe the unbelievable and imagine the unimaginable. Stop thinking like a film critic, and accept it for what it is…..a fictitious tale centered upon, focused around, and entirely about THE TRANSFORMERS. Isn’t that enough?
problem was the first movie had nothing to do with The Transformers. I saw more of Anthony Anderson then I did of Megatron for sh!t’s sake. Transformers series showed both decepticons and autobots equally (remember everytime a scene changed they showed the logo of either autobots or decepticons…I’m not suggesting they do that in movie though). I wanted the first movie to be successful so Bay had a chance to make a sequel on the faith of fans that the next one will be better. Here’s to hoping it doesn’t get more ridiculous.
if anyone believes that the 1st transformers film was yawnable then they arent true fans at all!! shia was great in it and megan fox was HOT plus the designs of the autobots and decepticons was awesome
I hope that soundwave is in teh movie, he looks sweet as a decepticon
Autobots rollout
They couldnt center the movie completly around the robots, they had to have a reason for them to come to earth, not just the, “oops, we crash landed here” plot from the cartoons. and humans always played a big role in the cartoons, spike and sparkplug, daniel, that weird scientist with the metal head, hell, they even had a kid in a wheel chair, so stop bashing the damn movie, it was bad ass, and number 2 will be even better.
I grew up with Transformers and I was very excited to see the 1st film and I freakin LOVED IT!!!!! To all of you who were hatin on the first one, you don’t know what you’re talkin about!!! I loved the cast and Shia did a great job. I am looking forward to see the next and I can’t wait!!! To all the haterz, please do me a favor and don’t waste my time reading your yawnable comments… Keep it to your damn boring selves!!!!!! blah blah blah
Hrrrrm… I believed the first movie was merely average (IF they had ended it there). The trailers did hype it up but watching it itself was not as exciting as I thought it would be. But of course because there would be a sequel and such, the first movie presented itself well.
I did wish there was a slightly better casting. Megan Fox? Understandable. But Shia? Not so much in my book.
Loved the first movie, the second will be even better. I grew up on the transformers and gobots, remember this is Hollywood and the movie was created for all to enjoy not just transformer fans.
lol I cant believe how many of you have commented badly on the first one it amazing the visual effects were awesome and the casting was done awesome Shia was awesome and Megan added that sexy look that made every guy rewatch the scene of her looking at the engine. The 2nd one I hope lives up to the hype and hope is just as bad ass as the first one or better but too shoot it all in only a year, I just dont hope they rush it. But seriously yawnable lol
oooh i see now soundwave he looks like him but he turns into a damn truck what da hell i like the boombox better and his tape spies
I cant believe there are haters on Transformers. I think that was one of the best blockbuster movies that came out that year. Special Effects? Unbelievable. Storyline? True, not the complete original, but would you really think today’s audience can connect with a young boy (like 10′ish) going on adventures with alien robots? I think the only thing the movie lacked was the interaction between the Decepticons. Other than that, it had it all and was able to deliver the story without giving too much info for the first movie. it was long enough.
Now, with the sequel, alot that had to be left out in the first movie will hopefully be explained in this one. The combining of transformers, female transformers, and a more detailed story of their history and relation to Earth. And of course, with Michael bay on it…. bigger and better action sequences.
Autobots…. ROLLOUT!!!!!
I dont understand how this so called Transformers fans could not catch up with time… Of course the movie has to fit in this genaration… I have almost all tapes and toys from the old transformers; the movie wasn’t like the old one but it sure did hit the mark…
The cast, the visual effects, the camera angles, sound editing, editing, it was one heck of a blockbuster. And im sure this next movie would be as long as Michael Bay sticks to he’s dramatic camera style.
AUTOBOTS transform for action!!!!
i hope optimus prime kick some serious butt in this sequel!! im a fan and i was getting pump up when he arrive @ the main battle scene but megatron kick his butt… shouldnt of happen hehe =)
i love the movie eventhough it was different from the cartoon but hey, don’t bagged it out …. yawnable?? fan…yeah right dude!!! dragonball was bad and im a fan of that too, shame, shame!!!!
