Upcoming Marvel Movies – 2016 & Beyond

– 2019 –

CAPTAIN MARVEL  (March 2019)

The first female-led Marvel film is centered on Carol Danvers. In the comics she’s a security chief working at the military compound where alien Kree hero Captain Marvel is based. They become romantically involved and when she is accidentally subjected to otherworldly Kree radiation her DNA takes on attributes of the alien race, transforming her into a superhuman. Her powers in the comic include flight, strength, and shooting energy bursts from her hands. For a time she has a split personality, unaware that she is also Ms.Marvel (or Captain Marvel as she is later called). She eventually goes on to lead The Avengers for a time. Marvel’s Kevin Feige has said that although her powers are cosmic, her adventures will take place on Earth.

INHUMANS  (July 2019)

The Inhumans are a race of beings with superpowers, created when an alien race called the Kree (Ronan the Accuser, the main villain in ‘Guardians’, was a Kree) experimented on Earth’s early humans. Their powers come from being exposed to a substance called Terrigen Mist, but sometimes the risky process leaves them with deformities. The most prominent Inhumans have a royal family social structure: Black Bolt, for instance, is the king. He emits large amounts of energy and force through his voice. If he’s not careful, he can level cities by speaking. In order to get around his power, he has developed a telepathic bond with his wife. Medusa is the queen, with the ability of enhanced hair, which she can mentally command to do anything she wishes, from lifting heavy objects, shielding her or attack her enemies. Feige says “This would have some of the social drama that we haven’t really done yet. X-Men obviously has been touching on that stuff for a while.” Indeed this is being seen as Marvel Studios’ rival to Fox’s ‘X-Men’. Vin Diesel has dropped hints that he may be involved, the suspicion is as Black Bolt.

– ALSO OF NOTE –

Despite fan demand, a solo Hulk movie is still not in the works. ‘Incredible Hulk’ was the most underperforming Marvel Studios product at the box office and Universal own the distribution rights to a Hulk standalone movie. Instead Marvel says they’ve devised an interesting arc for Hulk running from ‘Thor: Ragnarok’ through ‘Infinity – Part I’ to ‘Infinity – Part II’. They say it will feel like a Hulk movie when the three parts are added up. Unconfirmed rumours suggest this arc will be a loose adaptation of ‘Planet Hulk’.

– MARVEL ANIMATION –

Sony Pictures Animation are prepping a Spider-Man animated movie for theatrical release in 2018, written and produced by the directors of ‘The Lego Movie’ and ’21 Jump Street’.

Ultimate Spider-Man starts season 4 shortly on Disney XD, in which he goes up against the Sinister Six.

Guardians of the Galaxy is airing season 1 of its animated show on Disney XD.

– MARVEL TV –

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is currently airing season 3 on ABC.

Agent Carter is currently airing season 2 on ABC.

Marvel’s Most Wanted, a spin-off to Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., has a pilot coming in 2016 on ABC. It follows Shield characters Bobbi Morse (Adrianne Palicki) and Lance Hunter (Nick Blood), and co-stars Delroy Lindo as Dominic Fortune, a rogue and adventurer in the 1930s who craved wealth and excitement with his globe-trotting odysseys.

Damage Control has a pilot due on ABC in 2016. This comedy follows the overworked and underpaid clean up crew of the Marvel Universe, who come in and deal with the aftermath of major superhero conflicts

Daredevil drops all of season 2 onto Netflix in mid-March. Jon Bernthal co-stars as The Punisher.

Jessica Jones has season 1 on Netflix, and is expected to return.

Luke Cage and Iron Fist each have live-action shows launching on Netflix in 2016.

The Defenders (Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist) will team up to fight crime in New York in a Netflix miniseries in, potentially, late 2016.

No way, the start got delayed and they lost their original director (Rupert Wyatt). They haven’t even begun shooting yet. Next year.

He is. In the case of Old Man Logan I’m describing what happens in the comic series – if the movie uses the story arc it will be VERY different. Wolverine does end up fighting Red Skull in the comic (and a number of other crossover villains) but in the movie the Red Skull rights lie with Marvel not Fox so there’s almost no chance he’ll be involved. What the movie may take is the principle of an old Wolverine who’s refusing to fight, in a post-apocalyptic world where the villains have won. We’ll see as more is announced.

    Re Spider Man’
decent director. He also made Clown. But Vacation and Horrible bosses suggests a really bad script. And why not cast an American teen to play the American teen.

I haven’t seen Clown so can’t comment on it, what was it like? Cop Car seemed like a step up. I was impressed with the coming-of-age kid naturalism he achieved, so I’m interested to see how he applies that to a high school setting, if he does. You could well be right about the final product given who’s writing it, fingers crossed… The whole Brits should play Brits and Americans play Americans seems like a concern we’ve moved past, there are so many great performances in cinema where one is playing the other, no?

Clown is a pretty decent horror movie about a dude who puts on an antique clown suit and finds it can’t be removed. Not as stylish as Cop Car.
Point taken about Brits playing Americans. However, sometimes even when they are good actors they just do not look right. Neither this kid or the last one seem right. Point is that even in the Sam Raimi films James Franco actually looks more like the comic book Spiderman than Tobey Maguire.
