Horror Movies 2009 – Guide

- NOVEMBER -

The Wolfman
Release Date: November 06, 2009
Starring: Benicio Del Toro, Anthony Hopkins, Emily Blunt, Art Malik, Hugo Weaving
Director: Joe Johnston
Writer: Andrew Kevin Walker

The Wolfman got rid of its original director at the last minute (One Hour Photo’s excellent Mark Romanek) and replaced him with the bland Joe Johnston (Jurassic Park III). The early footage out of Comic-Con was ‘meh’, and the fact the release date has been pushed back several months is never a good sign. But it has a superb cast, a screenwriter capable of greatness, and make-up effects by the maestro Rick Baker, so hopefully it will surprise us. And it’s set in the 1880s, which is a brave choice.

Starring: Cameron Diaz, Frank Langella, James Marsden

Writer: Richard Kelly

Richard Kelly, of Donnie Darko fame, plays it safe with this twisty Twilight Zone-inspired premise. A young couple is gifted with a mysterious box that will reward them with $1m every time they press the button inside, but each time they do, someone in the world will die. Would you?

Splice – absolutely terrifying creature design

Burning Bright – easily the WTF movie of the year

Daybreakers – I hear it’s amazing but not really horror, despite the vamps

Pollypool or whatever it’s called – fantastic concept, can’t wait for it.

i’ve come to realize that horror movies aren’t scary any more, they are just boring or just action but not scary, they shouldn’t even be called horror movies any more just sex, gore, and violence.

I know where you’re coming from Robert, most horror movies confuse ‘gruesome’ for ‘frightening’. What was the last one you saw that was genuinely scary?

I don’t like gore, or weird monsters, or skeletons with scythes … I’m much more of a psychological thriller sort of guy.

Really interested in Splice. Cube is one of my favourite movies and Del Toro has yet to put his name to anything less than excellent.

    Must… see… “Burning Bright”…

Horror films these days lack the balls to try and understand their audience. I saw “The Unborn” and it had absolutely nothing to offer me. Something, something, silence… wait three seconds… LOUD NOISE.

The last time a film truly got under my skin was “Audition”. It was 3am when I finished it, but I still needed to leave the house and walk around in the rain.

Fingers crossed for Romero’s new zombie flick. I love the trilogy and even “Land” had its moments, despite being an hour too short. “Diary” was one of the worst films of last year and a massive insult to fans of the genre.

I like horror films that try something new. They don’t have to be good films, they just need something different in them and NO GODDAMN ‘CREEPY’ KIDS.

I’m just glad the trend of remaking Asian horror films seems to be over. The mood and atmosphere always gets lost in translation from what are typically superior original versions.

Nice to see original concepts coming out.

    Burning brightly looks insane.

I’ve *heard* Drag Me to Hell is excellent. Check out the review on this site and the ones on AICN, they’re all glowing.

I’m excited by the amount of original work on this list, I hope they’re all great and bring in the big bucks

H2 is probably the best one out of all the horror movies that will be coming out in ’09. The remake was great and Rob Zombie is going to make this one even better. The college party aspect is taking a different direction than the orginal Halloween 2 with the hospital but I think it will work. Michael is back!!!

What about “Lesbian Vampire Killers” does that count?

The reason it’s not on here is that it’s a British film that, unlike The Descent 2, has no chance of getting a theatrical release in the States.

Dude, a fantastic list. Fair play. Can’t wait for Drag Me To Hell and no year is complete without a Saw movie. :)
