Independence Day: Resurgence - New Trailer

Independence Day: Resurgence has a new trailer, with so much destruction it looks like Earth would last 5 minutes.

A giant organic walker is visible toward the end, Brent Spiner looks like he’ll be serving up the ham again, and Judd Hirsch hasn’t aged a day in 20 years.

Much of the appeal of the original was the ‘what if’ scenario of alien craft hovering above our cities, intentions unknown. The first 40 minutes still holds up as terrific entertainment. Watching the teaser trailer in 1996 and seeing the destructive wall of flame moving down a New York City street was mind-blowing at the time (echoed in creepy fashion by 9/11 years later). In today’s sequel though Earth’s use of alien technology moves it away from a New York we recognise to a distinctly sci-fi world, and the scale of destruction is so unfathomable that’s it’s hard to get a root in reality. For these reasons Resurgence won’t connect in anything like the same way. Still as a bit of throwaway nostalgic sci-fi, this looks fun. And it’s Jeff Goldblum headlining a summer blockbuster again.

Independence Day: Resurgence is released 23 June in the UK, 24 June in the US.
