Nick Cassavetes’s modern classic is a beautiful and heartbreaking romance drama. Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams star as Noah and Allie; a young couple whose story about how they meet and fall in love in the 1940s is narrated from the present day by an elderly patient. There are many obstacles that prevent the young couple from being together, but they eventually overcome them in the saddest but most beautiful way. Be prepared to sob a river.
3. West Side Story (1961)
The energetic 1961 musical is an adaptation of Romeo and Juliet, set in New York. Two rival street gangs – the Sharks and the Jets – battle each other on the streets of Manhattan to gain territory. However, whilst attending a dance, Tony, best friend of Jet leader Riff, falls in love with Maria – the sister of Sharks leader Bernardo. The two conceal their love from everyone as they meet in secret and their feelings from each other grow stronger. But the two gangs are preparing for a final showdown to proclaim control of the streets. Is the romance doomed to failure, or can it overcome?

This eight time Oscar winner starring Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh focuses on the love between Rhett Butler and Scarlett O’Hara – a woman with a selfish streak who refuses to confess her feelings for Butler, and loses him in the process.
1. Casablanca (1942)
Set during WWII, bitter bar owner Rick Blaine (Humphrey Bogart) must decide if he is to help his ex Ilsa (Ingrid Bergman), the woman he still loves, and her Resistance leader husband flee the city of Casablanca, and in doing so lose her forever. The ultimate conflict of the heart, in one of the greatest love stories ever told.

I love your list! There are actually 4 I haven’t seen, but I agree with the ones I have. I love that you put the new Romeo+Juliet in there. It’s one of my favorites and so many people can’t stand it! I was kind of surprised that you didn’t have sleepless in seattle though! Some others that are great are Pride and Prejudice (The new one is really great!) and The Princess Bride. Great romances!

They are great romantic films and so are the ones you mentioned, but I think that any of these that I mentioned are better than for eg: My Fair Lady…

I laughed at the suggestions of Music & Lyrics and Mr and Mrs Smith.. I loved your list as far as heterosexual romance goes, but I think Maurice is quite romantic. (not so much at the beginning with Hugh Grant, but towards the end with the country boy Scudder..) E.M Forster does write some good stuff, but A Room with a View isn’t all it’s cracked up to be..
I’ve seen so many romantic films that I can’t think of any more to add.. titles were never my thing.
I wish I had the patience for Casablanca. I find old movies move so slowly… maybe I’ll start from the middle or something.
Best romantic movies? The Indecent Proposal…should have been there
My Sassy Girl, The Wedding Planner, Serendipty, Walk to Remember, Sleepless in Seattle, Tuck Everlasting, Most of Disney Classics, The Wedding Singer, Enchanted, She’s All That, Pearl Harbor, Anastasia (the animated movie), He’s Just Not Into You, Definitely Maybe, Just Friends, The Proposal, Confessions of a Shopaholic, Love and Basketball, and alot of the movies you’ve already listed.
Yes, some of these are romantic comedies but I think they are just as good to be called Romance Movies =]
I would love to find “Kate & Leopold” mentioned as one of most romantic movie of all time. Wait a minute…, does everybody miss “English Patient” and “You’ve Got Mail”???

i think one of the most underrated, and best romantic movies, is What Dreams May Come with robin williams so sad and an all round beautiful film x x go watch it
What Dreams May Come is a fantastic and a masterpiece of romance. If you love romance you need to watch this.

and also Captain Corrielle’s Mandolia. Im not sure if that last one is spelled right. It with Nicolas Cage and Penelope Cruz. Just watched it and loved it.
