Director: Etan Cohen
Out: December 21, 2018
new comedy movies 2018

A humorous take on Arthur Conan Doyle’s classic mysteries featuring Sherlock Holmes (Ferrell) and Doctor Watson (Reilly) going up against Moriarty (Fiennes)… Hugh Laurie is Mycroft (elder brother of Sherlock), the great Rob Bryant is Inspector Lestrade (Scotland Yard detective), Pam Ferris plays Queen Victoria, while Rebecca Hall and Kelly McDonald add some acting class as Dr. Grace Hart and Rose Hudson. It’s based loosely on Farrell’s sketch playing Sherlock on SNL. Ferrell and Reilly are one of great comedy duos of modern times, pure gold in ‘Step Brothers’ and ‘Talladega Nights’. However those outings were directed by Adam McKay, who’s made most of Farrell’s standout comedies, ‘Holmes And Watson’ has the director of ‘Get Hard’ which was average at best. Still the comedic concept and casting are perfect (Fiennes can be a great comic villain too). They’d have to work hard to screw this up.

– SOMETIME IN 2018 –

The War With Grandpa
Starring: Robert De Niro, Marisa Tomei, Christopher Walken, Eugene Levy, Laura Marano
Director: Tim Hill
Out: TBC 2018

Coming-of-age family comedy about a boy who is forced to lose his beloved bedroom when his recently widowed grandfather (De Niro) moves in. To reclaim it, he devises a series of outrageous pranks with the help of his friends, to force his grandpa to surrender. But Grandpa turns out to be tougher than expected, capable of pranking back, and all-out war ensues… Based on the 1984 children’s book by Robert Kimmel Smith, which captured the anger and frustration that accompanies a child’s inability to control his life. Christopher Walken and Eugene Levy play Grandpa’s pals. Which means De Niro and Walken are reuniting for the first time since ‘The Deer Hunter’ (1978), though the material says much about their careers today. The director’s been making poorly-received family films for a long time, including ‘Hop’, ‘Garfield 2’ and ‘Alvin And The Chipmunks’, which suggests this will probably veer too childish and lowbrow.
