I Love You Man Soundtrack (Songs) - Listen To It Here
The I Love You Man soundtrack. Bromance! There’s nothing wrong with it. There’s nothing wrong with dudes loving their dude friends. Because, when it comes down to it, we’re all dudes. All the dudes are anyway, not the chicks – they’re chicks. But, dudes – we’re all dudes. And we can love each other dudes. There’s also nothing wrong with dudes having sex with other dudes, if that’s the kind of thing both of those dudes are interested in – but that’s not what this is about.

Paul Rudd is an interesting case. His first film role was in Clueless, then he cropped up in Halloween: The Curse Of Michael Myers (a classic, I’m sure you’ll agree), Baz Luhrman’s Romeo & Juliet, Jennifer Aniston vehicle The Object Of My Affection, and even The Cider House Rules alongside Michael “I-don’t-need-to-do-accents-because-I’m-a-bloody-national-treasure” Caine. Then after floundering for a few years and popping up with a returning part as Phoebe’s boyfriend towards the awful end of Friends, he appeared as Brian Fantana in Anchorman – still the highpoint of the post-frat-pack comedies – and found his niche. And since then? The 40 Year Old Virgin, Reno 911!, Knocked Up, Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Role Models (which he co-wrote) and now I Love You, Man. Seems he realised that carving out a career as a cute but basically useless bit-part player in LA is less satisfying than helping to shape the comedy landscape. Kudos.

Thing is, he’s a better contributor than auteur, and I Love You, Man seems destined to be filed in the “so what” section of forgettable comedies alongside Jim Carrey’s recent yawn-fest Yes Man and, well, at least half of the other comedies Rudd has appeared in. Let’s face it, as cute and likeable as Paul Rudd is, he’s not Steve Carell.

But one thing you can say for I Love You, Man – it’s got a pretty great soundtrack CD attached to it. In fact, let’s say it – the I Love You, Man soundtrack is fantastic. ‘Set You Free’, the best song The Black Keys have ever recorded, and that’s saying something. Beck, Rush (to be enjoyed with post-modern self-awareness), The Donnas, and a little number called ‘Ain’t That A Kick In The Head’ by a young man you might know as Dean Frickin’ Martin. Even Vampire Weekend sound good here.

However, it is tainted somewhat. It feels disposable, inconsequential, being attached as it is to a film destined to be so quickly forgotten – lost, if you will, down the back of the comedy sofa. And evoking the imagery and impact of the film is a big part of the pleasure of a quality soundtrack album (see Reservoir Dogs and Trainspotting for prime examples). If you buy this album you’re going to have some good listening, but in a year you’ll be looking on your CD shelf, and you’ll say to yourself “hey – the I Love You, Man soundtrack. I remember that. It was kind of forgettable,” at which point you’ll stick a Black Keys album on instead.

Like the Beck track + Dean Martin makes any soundtrack. Oh and Chris… I love you, man.

It seems like there is another song in the movie that is not on the soundtrack … it comes up when Peter is in the car, about half way through the movie?

I was looking for that song for 2 days. Thanks 1!

Any idea what the name of the song is that’s playing toward the end as Segel’s character is walking on the beach alone with his dog. Just before he is invited back to the wedding?

you are the best thing by ray laMontagne is in the movie, not on the soundtrack, might be what your thinking of, great song.

  • Alain said:

wow, Jess, thanks! That was exactly the song I was thinking of.

ughh, shame on you. to me, steve carell and paul rudd should not even be compared. their types of humor and the characters they typically play are completely different. the world knows carell is hilarious. however, paul rudd is just as comical. i will admit, when seeing i love you man, i was slightly disappointed. but i was also disappointed after watching pineapple express and superbad for the first time. they were built up so much that by the time i saw them, it was a bit of a let down. but like those films, i think i love you man will be a movie that, with time, when you’re randomly chillin with your pals, can quote and it be simply hilarious. but that’s just my opinion. now, i’m gonna go slap da bass mon.

Superbad and Pineapple Express were both self-indulgent and disappointing in my eyes. The 40 Year Old Virgin and Knocked Up are the stand-out gems from this little comedy fraternity. Personally, I think Seth Rogan is a really good performer but he needs someone to give him a stern talking to if he’s going to make some comedy classics and not just a selection of pretty funny slacker flicks. If any of their films contained a somewhat interesting or believable female character (except maybe the Catherine Keener character in Virgin) that might help. I mean, the whole thing about absolutely stunning lingerie model looking women falling for slovenly male schlub – which happens in pretty much all these films – needs to be addressed.

I was wondering though, does anyone know what song is playing when Peter is in the car and he sees the billboards?
    thanks!

  • matt said:

what is the name of the song they do during the clip in the credits?

  • Kinneas said:

What’s the name of the piece of classical music playing at the wedding? It’s a well-known piece (just not by me, obviously) and it’s used widely.

It’s something that I should know.

does anyone know the name of the song thats playing when peter is driving in his car and he realises he has no friends and keeps seeing loads guys hanging out together?

I’m pretty sure that The Yeah Yeah Yeah Song by The Flaming Lips is somewhere in there, however, I could be mistaken..
