The Dark Knight 2 (Batman Begins 3) – Sequel Plans
9.07.08 # Sequel # 449 CommentsSo what do we call the Dark Knight sequel?… The Dark Knight 2? Batman Begins 3? Batman 3? Batman 7? If you count Adam West’s movie it’s Batman 8 and Tim Burton’s Batman was a remake.
Minor spoilers ahead…
Will the Joker disappear from the next movie or be recast? When Gary Oldman was asked recently, he made an interesting point, “They recast Katie Holmes’ character. I understand that this is a different circumstance, but I think another actor could do the job. I think Heath would want another actor to do the job.”
But Gary went on… “Maybe we don’t need the Joker. Because we’ll have The Riddler.”
…Personally, I’d like to see a new take on the Penguin too. But the writers have hinted they will avoid Penguin and Catwoman in favour of some of the many other villains from Batman’s 69 year history. After all Scarecrow and Ra’s Al Ghul hadn’t been seen on the big screen until Batman Begins.
Don’t expect to see Robin either. Christian Bale is not keen on the idea at all. On the press tour he remarked, “If Robin crops up in one of the new Batman films, I’ll be chaining myself up somewhere and refusing to go to work.”
Oh and that’s right, Bale said “new Batman films”. Plural. Sounds like he’s planning on staying around for a while…
Which villains would you like to see in Batman Begins 3? The Riddler? Penguin? Catwoman? Maybe Bane? Harley Quinn? Mr. Freeze? Poison Ivy? Ventriloquist? Check out the options here

Thank you Sheridan, I could say this villian over this villian but,
I don’t think it would matter as long as Nolan is directing. To even come close to the Joker Nolan would have to portray a more sinister
Riddler then ever created before. I like the Riddler because like the Joker in his own way its his psychopathic behavior. I dont know why but the Riddler just seems to be as close of a clone to the
Joker than any other villian. What do you think?
I think you’re absolutely right that the Riddler in particular will invite comparisons that it can’t live up to. I think they’re wrong to ignore The Penguin, a ‘real world’ version would be interesting to watch. I expect they will pair whoever it is up with a female villain this time too, because the dynamic hasn’t been explored yet and there’s space for it.
Personnally I would like to see Scarface and Clay face. Batman Begins introduced a new characters (Scarecrow and Raz) but Dark Knight did not. If they want to really keep this new spin going then they need to keep introducing new characters.
The Riddler could work. He could perhaps be a private detective in the employ of Gotham City – a brilliant, high-class strategist who gets his kicks off this kind of thing – who has a fascination with riddles, maybe. The Riddler’s abusive childhood and compulsion to tell the truth could work in the Nolanverse. Escalation and the competition Batman is giving him could lead him to try and test the Batman’s detective-mettle. The detective aspect of him hasn’t been explored fully yet and I’d like to see that. Eventually, Batman’s constant overshadowing/defeating of the Riddler’s schemes and tests and such leads him to insanity – that or he begins to get a thrill he’s never experienced in the form of someone on the same platform of brilliance as him. So he decides to commit crimes as a way of mental-fencing with Batman, you know? Escalation.
Get David Tennant to play him – serious, slightly quirky, and with hints of insanity seeping through when he gets into a certain “game” he’s set up for Batman. Come on, you know it’d be great to watch.
Some really creative ideas J, I can imagine that. And David Tennant is an interesting choice too.
you know what,The riddler might work, execpt i dont know how the green suit will work with the new dark realistic look, I think they should have that big guy (I forgot his name) who uses wierd steroids, and eventually breaks batmans back(remeber him). If there is a sequel, which i hope there is, but i dont know how there gonna follow up on this masterpiece(they might win an oscor), i think they will go with two villians like they have done with begins and the dark knight, and many other batman films,
p.s, is it just me or did the scarecrow apear in the dark knight? i swear that was him but i cant remember, if it was him or some dude in a mask. could someone please tell me. thanks, and tell me what you think of my comment
Get Johnny Depp as the RIDDLER.
Jacke, you’re thinking of Bane, that’s who broke Batman’s back.
It is Scarecrow in The Dark Knight, yeah.
I’m sure they’d work green into the Riddler suit, but more subtly than before, after all the Joker kept all his colors.
I agree it will almost certainly be two major villains, Christopher Nolan likes to use more than one because it allows for a more epic plot with more opportunity for the numerous twists and turns he is famous for. I’d be really surprised if there weren’t.
I think Bane would make a great continuation of villians…The mob would see the joker as unstoppable…they will try to find someone equal to Batman and guess what….? Bane comes in place as a drug addict using some experimental drug to enhance himself…that I see the new storyline…
Maybe yes…maybe no…
I know Batman has all of these different villians from the comic books but, he is the only super hero besides Iron Man that is just a man without super powers,at least I think so. I mean they both use their gadgets and wits to defeat criminals. I think that is why it
always works when Batman battles the Joker a villian without superpowers just super intellect Im an Iron Man fan from the beginning but I also have always been a Batman fan as well. Im not knocking the other super heroes its the fact that both of these guys also have to make quick decisions without the luxury of getting a second chance.
Riddler’s got my vote for being a deranged narcisstic criminal.
however the Dark Knight is being [--spoiler--] by the city of Gotham, so I’m curious to see what kind of crazy plot Nolan can scheme.
until then tune-in on the next movie Batfans (^_^)
what about TWO FACE?? isnt that the whole point of the first movie?? harvey dent is becoming 2 face??
Remember no Dark Knight spoilers guys. Some people reading this message board haven’t watched it yet.
kudos to the makers Dark Knight for their record breaking opening weekend… it’s no wonder there’s talk of another one coming out ASAP
johnny depp as the riddler, he couldve made a very good joker aswell since he is so great at those offbeat odd kind of characters. however i think ledgers performance as the joker was extraordinary, it amazed me.
