Meet Dave Reviews – “Tired”
11.07.08 # 8:39 # Review # 2 Comments
The Meet Dave reviews have landed. And they contain a lot of tired sighing…
The plot sees little aliens (lead by a miniature Eddie Murphy) build a replica of a man (another Eddie Murphy) to pilot around earth. But the mission to save their homeworld is thrown off course when the replica falls for a human (Elizabeth Banks).
Meet Dave reteams Eddie Murphy with the director of the dreaded Norbit, yet it was co-written by Bill Corbett, of ‘Mystery Science Theater 3000′ fame, and a ‘Frasier’ regular.
Here’s what the critics are saying:
AP -
“’Meet Dave.’ Or don’t. Eddie Murphy doesn’t particularly seem to care one way or the other… Essentially phoning in the broad, family friendly shtick that has become his trademark over the past decade… It runs through a variety of bland fish-out-of-water scenarios in workmanlike fashion.”
“…the goofy setup alone keeps it a safe distance from Golden Raspberry territory…That said, this sci-fi romp seriously skimps on the sort of wacky comedy that should have flown liberally from such an inspired premise.”
“Are you under the age of 11 and instantly amused by the notion of a spaceship that looks like Eddie Murphy, captained by a tiny Eddie Murphy and a crew of Spandex-clad explorers? If you answered ‘yes’, proceed to Meet Dave… Sadly, laughs are in short supply in this beyond-mild comedy.”
It currently holds a 22% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Meet Dave was too simple and elementary. Eddie Murphy can be hilarious, but not just by making funny faces and motions. His performance was average. Ed Helms (#2) on the other hand makes the second half of the movie and shows why his career in Hollywood is taking off. Ed is FUNNY. Meet Dave gets a 6 out of 10 for me.
I would rather go back to seeing Snakes on a Plane… Wall-E is better than this… and he doesn’t even talk…
Please Murphy… for all of us… stick with ‘Donkey.’ After this movie, voice acting on Shrek may be the best thing you’ve done so far.
I give the movie 3.5 out of 10.
P.S. When the movie is going to flop… make sure it isn’t released when A-list movies are coming out like The Dark Knight, Journey to the Centre of the Earth, Hancock etc…
