The Step Brothers reviews have fought their way online. The message – If you like adolescent humour, you’ll love it. If you don’t… you won’t.

Step Brothers is about two 40 year olds who’ve never left home, act like 12 year olds and have to room together when their parents get married. It’s directed by Adam McKay, who made Talladega Nights and Anchorman. And it’s rated R.

Here’s what the critics are saying:

MSNBC -

“Now we know why the trailers for Step Brothers were so dispiriting – the movie actually has lots of laughs, but almost all of them come from places too obscene and outrageous to include in the average coming attraction…the film had me laughing consistently almost the entire way through.”

Village Voice -

“Ferrell and Reilly aren’t playing characters so much as they are personifying the ids of all those American males who either never learned to put away childish things, or did and wished they hadn’t…Not to wax too serious here (since this is, after all, a movie in which two nearly middle-aged men beat each other over the heads with blunt instruments on their front lawn), but ticking away…is a fairly astute commentary on how we define such abstract concepts as “growing up” and “making something of yourself,” whether it’s a wife and 2.5 kids, a six-pack of rock-hard abs, or a seven-figure bank account.”

AP -

“There’s no odd-couple tension, no witty banter, just a prolonged, painfully unfunny game of one-upmanship…aimed at the lowest common denominator. Brennan and Dale routinely beat each other to a pulp with whatever is convenient: a shovel, a cymbal, a bike, their fists…There’s also the obligatory gross-out bodily humor, including Dale’s inability to keep his gas to himself during a job interview (hardy-har)…Ferrell and Reilly are essentially playing the same person, which is the movie’s fundamental, irreparable flaw.”

It currently holds a 75% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, compared to 21% for Semi-Pro and 72% for Talladega Nights.
