Tony Scott Talks ‘The Warriors’ Remake

the-warriors-movie.jpg
Tony Scott ranks pretty high up the list of action directors. So if you were to do a remake of an action packed cult-classic, he’s definitely the guy to go to, and luckily for ‘The Warriors’ that’s exactly what they did. The film is extremely beloved, so when remaking it there are only really two ways you can go without pissing everyone off. Do a shot for shot, identical movie such as the Omen remake or stray so far from the original that the new film stands on it’s own and can be appreciated separately from the original such as The Thing remake of The Fly remake. It looks like Scott is going down the second road.

From MTV -

“The Warriors” is a modern classic, the tale of a gang making their way from the Bronx to Coney Island while a city full of rivals hunts them.

“I’m not doing a straight remake,” [Scott] told RT. “I love the original ‘Warriors’ and I’m using the same basic story. It’s really still 10 guys stuck at point B and they need to get back to point A. But I’m going to set it in Los Angeles and it’s going to be a kind of study of gang culture in LA today.”

Scott revealed to RT that he’s been speaking with local LA gangs, specifically naming the “Crips, Bloods, The 18th Street Gang [and] The Vietnamese.” The response has been positive so far as Scott tells it; many gang members have seen the original and are excited about the possibility of getting involved with the remake.

As a native New Yorker, I’m not terribly pleased to hear about the change of venue but I suppose it makes sense. Los Angeles is a very different sort of location; Scott describes it as “a city which is horizontal.” His vision? “I’m hoping to get a hundred thousand real gang members standing on the Vincent Thomas Bridge for one shot.” The number sounds a bit large, but I like the ambition Tony!

Having never seen the original, the film holds no special place in my heart, but I know how much some people love the films and the idea of remaking it might upset a lot of people, however it is definitely possible to re-imagine a film and come up with something as good as if not better than the original, as I mentioned before The Thing was remade after about 30 years and both films are now considered horror classics. It has been about 30 years since The Warriors was made, is it about time it was updated?

(Update 2012) With director Tony Scott’s tragic death, don’t expect the movie to happen in the next couple of years.

The Warriors is, personally, my favourite film of all time, I think one of the charms is the nostalgic New York City and ‘bopper’ gangs. It was about brawlin’ and not just killing people because they looked at you wrong, you may have got beaten up but not shot. I loved the whole embroided team vest that they all wear with pride and their devotion to the lifestyle. I think he should of done a half ‘n’ half of his idea, so remake it with a different story but keep the gangs the same and the ideology the same. Keep it in the 70′s.

what does michael vick have to do with this? get over it HE had dogs fight, some died, he went to jail did his 2 years, and is out and just signed a $100 million contract…suck on that…GO EAGLES!!! and you’re not tough because i have never heard of a gang being called a “crypt” u idiot stop lying about how the gangs in your neighborhood got you scared to come outside.

now back to the situation at hand, being that i am born and raised in los angeles (INGLEWOOD,CA) to be exact…I AM ONE OF the biggest Warriors fans and its my favorite movie of all time, i grew up in gang land usa, but i think bringing the warriors to modern times no matter which coast east or west, wouldnt make for a good movie, because the warriors would be shot by rival gangs, or have a shoot out and shot by police in the first 20 minutes and the movie would be over. so Gangs, back in the early 80′s fought with fists, knives, bats, chains that would make more of a survivor movie like the original so Scott should either make a prequel to see how the warriors started and how they get down with the rivals, and if they do decide to bring it to la do a kind of old school in the 80′s make it like the gangs heard, or read about what happened in NY and they want to try and do a LOS ANGELES gang truce and it turns sour like what happened with the Warriors.

I Literally Loved The Warriors!’ I Think Booker T From WWE Should Be Cyrus! He’s Got The Whole “CAN YOU DIGGGG ITTTTT?!!!” Thing Goin On! Hahaha But Anyway About The Whole Having Real Gang Members In The Remake And Having It In L.A. Isnt Such A Great Idea, I’d Rather See It In New York Just Like In The Original.

Nobody is a bigger Warriors fan than I, and I say do it!!!
I’m excited to see the story all over again, with different locale, actors, etc.
Nothing will replace the original in my heart, but sometimes one can love an original and a remake equally.

Remaking a classic like the Warriors is a terrible idea! Leave the great cult classics alone. I heard they were even considering remaking Saturday Night Fever. How about an original idea???? Is that asking for too much? I will definately boycott a Warriors remake. I don’t want anything to do with it. Please don’t do it!!!

I believe that you should just make a remake of the game and see how that sells and then you can reconsider making this movie.
I loved playing the game and I would buy it even if it was $200
I have a lot of friends who love the game and I know would love to see another one this time for ps3 or Xbox 360
