Top 10 Star Wars Quotes (and what makes them great)
31.07.08 # Top Ten # 25 Comments
Aside from the obvious famous Star Wars quotes such as “Use the Force, Luke” and “I am your father,” the Star Wars movies really do hide some literary gems within their screenplays, which, in some cases, are beautifully delivered.
I have thus compiled a list of ten Star Wars quotes based on a number of qualities; delivery, style, humour, meaning, poetic nature, importance and charisma. I did not want to simply include a regurgitated top ten with “I am your father” at number one – we all know and love those kinds of quotes. This list is a more speculative look at the whole series, including quotes that define characters, plots, and do everything from send chills down the spine to positively inspire generations of fellow nerds.
Hopefully this list will conjure thought, review, memory and debate amongst us all. Enjoy!
10. “When 900 years old, you reach… Look as good, you will not.”

Film: Episode VI: Return Of The Jedi
Who: Yoda to Luke Skywalker
What makes it great?
In cinema, the Degoba system is possibly one of the most ambitious and atmospheric sets ever made, especially at the time of production in the late 70s/ early 80s. The swamp-ish scenery and aged frailty of Yoda’s appearance emphasises a beautiful theme in the Star Wars films – the past. The past is a theme that the original saga concentrates on a lot in terms of narrative and plot, and the visits to Yoda in Empire Strikes Back and Return Of The Jedi personify (or more accurately, Yodafy) this theme in the character of Yoda and the decaying nature of his home. Luke is trained in the Force by a slowly dying master, whose wisdom knows no boundaries. This whole context is summed up in this beautiful, quirky and humorous quote from Yoda that reveals his age, his connection to Luke’s past and his modest and humble personality as a shaman-esqsue old prophet.

Hey Thomas…enjoyed your musings. You are quite the gifted writer. Very good use of words to describe your defense of each quote.

A couple/few that I think were overlooked. I will leave it to others to debate.
Do. Or do not. There is no try. Yoda
Everything is proceeding as I have foreseen. Emperor
You were right about one thing, Master. The negotiations were short. Obi-Wan.
Never tell me the odds. Han Solo
Thanks for the comments guys. This has got quite a lot of attention and I’m flattered. Sorry about the Jedi mistake though, D’oh!
- Tom
“Oh Anny! You’re breaking my heart” was the very line that not only solidied, in my mind, that ep 1 – 3 were pure trash, but made me want to go ahead and get up and leave ep 3. Though, my friend asked me about an hour into the movie “Hey, ya wanna leave? This sucks.”, it was tempting, but i stomached it through.
Wow, what a great list. In addition to picking out great lines, you also have great commentary for them. Might not have agreed with all of these choices before, but now I do.
“I’ve got a bad feeling about this”
Probably the most PIMP line in history
“Fear is the path to the dark side. Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering.” By Yoda
“The Force is strong with this one.”
Who’s more foolish the fool or the fool who follows him. BY Obi-Wan
“Do or not do, there is no try,” is by far the best quote of all the SW movies. Yoda the master tells it all with these few words.
Luminous beings are we, not this crude matter.
Use the force.
Ive got a bad feeling about this
I am your father
yahoo
This battle station will be quite operational when your friends arrive.
“Your confidence is your weakness” Luke
“Your faith in your friends is yours” The Emperor.
Love this quote, it’s like tit for tat on a galatic scale!
also
“The Emperor is not as forgiving as I am” Vader
in plan speak I’m a b@stard wait till my boss gets here!
and finally
“You rebel scum” Imperial Officer
I love this guy! it’s his only line in the film so he makes it count!!
very nice list man my fav made number 3 hahaha
…. i know
that is the most romantic scene in a movie
See now this line is so much more memorable to me in Return of the Jedi. When Leia returns the favor. I prefer that exchange to this one but this is amoung my favorites.
