The Year One reviews have arrived. Is it a biblical blast of Jack Black belly laughs?
It’s a brave comic team who takes on the territory mastered in Life Of Brian. As you’ll read below, Year One not only fails by comparison but also fails to works as a comic movie. This is ominous news for Ghostbusters III because it’s pretty much the same creative team behind it.
Here’s what the movie critics are saying -
“Jack Black and Michael Cera were not born to be co-stars. Black was fresh and funny once…but here he forgets to act and simply announces his lines. Cera plays shy and uncertain, but then he always does… …the film’s better moments are in the trailer, of which it can be said, if they were removed from the film, it would be nearly bereft of better moments.”
“Sounds funny, right? But the script is strictly bargain basement, offering a plethora of poop, sex and fart jokes and vulgarity without a smidgen of wit. Black does his Jack Black thing well enough, but the results are by now unfortunately predictable.”
AV Club –
“It’s a potentially funny, tricky premise, and in the hands of someone as talented and slightly skewed as writer-director Harold Ramis and a pair of writers from The Office, it should have worked. But for the most part, it doesn’t. Year One isn’t dreadful; it just isn’t nearly as funny as it hopes to be.”
Year One currently holds an 18% rating on Rotten Tomatoes from 44 reviews.

I had a feeling this was going to be a turkey, Jack Black is Jack Black thats it, he has nothing else to offer.
Ive known Mel Brooks and Monty Python.
Ive watched Mel Brookes and Monty Python.
Year One..you are no Mel Brooks and Monty Python.
Jack Black..take a vacation for awhile.
I thought it should have been rated R because it was a nasty movie .
They used the F word in it and there was so much vulgar sex talk in it.
Its not a movie I would want to sit and watch with my kids or watch period.
There were some parts in it that were just plain gross.
Times are hard right now and I wish I had the money back I spent to watch this movie.
We went to this movie to celebrate my nephews sixteen birthday my husband walked out and didnt finish watching it.
He couldnt sit there with my teenage daughter and watch it very uncomfortable.
Making fun of the bible isnt my kind of movie either.
I’m sure there will be people that will think they thought it was funny I thought it was just a plain joke that they made such a stupid nasty movie and it’s even in the theaters.
Wylmns. You are overreacting like most people do. They Arent making fun. Theyre re-enacting how life was when jesus just died and no one believed in God. So guess what, If you dont like funny movies, dont watch them. Great movie!
Nathan you were a little harsh there. I think Wylmms has a good point and you should respect that
I saw it last night. It looked like it had a lot of potential to be funny, but it wasn’t. At all. I don’t blame Jack Black, he was fine. It was the writing. It was just terrible. It was as the writers didn’t understand or care enough about the ancient historical setting to come up with any cleverness or humor. In all of the places where they had the opportunity to be funny, they just drew a blank, or regressed into violence (how is male rape funny?) or into bathroom humor. I’d call this movie a complete failure.
well to be completely honest i thought it was an OK movie. jack black did what he does best, be fat and funny. And Micheal Cera did a good job of losing his virginity AGAIN. its cool guys good stuff
Nathan, you’re a moron. This movie depicts events that happened waaaaayyyyyyy before Jesus died. And Wylmns is COMPLETELY right. I probably should have walked out myself. I can honestly say that over 20 people got up and left cause it was THAT vulgar. I’m a 25 yr old college student. I can handle vulgar. But this was just plain GROSS. And it’s one thing if it’s vulgar and FUNNY; that’s acceptable to me. But one it’s vulgar and totally UNFUNNY; WASTE OF TIME!!!
SAVE YOUR MONEY!! HORRIBLE HORRIBLE MOVIE!! And i consider myself a big jack black and michael cera fan.
i have found it a funny movie. it might have talk about the bible and stuff. it not to fun of the bible. it just a sense of humour. it was a cool movie, and if you are serious bible reader all that stuff. you shouldn’t be watching the movie, you should have read up. before watching the movie, then you will know what the movie was about. if you are a true bible people person, then the only you should be watching only bible movies. or true stories, not comedy movies….
disspointing. trailers made this movie look like another classic, but after 15 min. into this i wanted to jump over into the other theater to watch Hangover.
great movie.
besides being extremely funny, it is extremely thought provoking.
if you are at all into philosophy/theology you will find this movie interesting.
i understand how some may be offended… but really, i found this movie to support belief in God.
For those who were offended by the F word, in PG-13 movies, the movie is allowed one F word.
Yeah, I wouldn’t listen to R. It was neither thought-provoking nor philosophical. The only philosophical theme throughout the whole movie was the idea of non-religion. Woah! And chances are if you are into theology, you aren’t into sodomy and farts. Also, I would be a pretty offended Christian (were I a Christian) after seeing this movie. It was clearly not supportive of religion.
This movie was downright awful, and I don’t think I’m being too harsh (considering that I wasted $9), because I really (really) wanted to like it, especially with Harold Ramis and such a great cast. I found it very disappointing and juvenile. So, do not see this movie if you are into philosophy/theology, or have even a grain of intelligence.
I a big Jack black fan
loved
school of rock
nacho libre
that holiday movie he did with kate winslet was brilliant
loved loved loved kung fu panda
loved shark tales
I love his movies
unfortunately Jack black that I know did not show up for this movie.
It was just awful…excruciately awful to watch,. I tried to sit tight hoping that the movie would get better. I could barely get past the first part where he is eating from the apple hoping they would comeup with some really funny lines but to my dismay the dialogue was just plain awful.. nothing funny at all
I did laugh for about a minute with the Cain and Able scen but they over did it.. although the part where they were being chased by cains father was funny when they looked like they were going fast and a herdsman walked past them. so I said to myself in that funny movie maybe the movie will get better. It didn’t…I am sad to say this is the first jack black film I walked out on and wished I had not paid money for. It was too bad for words. I actually ha to pay to see another movie just to erase the awful feeling of having wasted twelve bucks on a movie from my head…I went an paid to see the terminator movie which was better and made me feel as if I had not wasted my time.
Sorry Jack Black but you should fire the guy who signed you up for this film. read the script next time.
sorry about the type os…i was in a hurry but I meant every word.
