The Pineapple Express reviews have puffed their way online and it looks like it’s a solid entry into the stoner hall of fame.

Pineapple is another Judd Apatow-produced comedy, co-scripted by Seth Rogen. Interestingly, Rogen originally wrote the part of drug dealer Saul for himself, it wasn’t until the table read that he realised James Franco would be funnier in the role.

Here’s what the critics are saying:

USA Today -

“Director David Gordon Green, whose last film was the somber character study Snow Angels, shows a definite talent for gut-busting comedy. …The laughs — mostly crude, profane and drug-addled — are almost non-stop… Franco is a revelation.”

Hollywood Reporter -

“…pacing is definitely not one of its strong suits — closing in on an all-too-apparent two hours. – …The action aspect differs Pineapple Express from Apatow’s previous production output. – …the giddily over-the-top fight sequences…handily compensate for the lag time.”

Rolling Stone -

“You’ll go limp from laughing… Franco delivers a sidesplitting tour de force as the sweetly profane Saul… It’s up there with The Big Lebowski, Dazed and Confused and Fast Times at Ridgemont High, only a lot gorier. …[Rogen] totally rocks it as the world’s unlikeliest action hero.”

New York Times -

“…as it shifts genre gears and cranks up the noise, it becomes disappointingly sober and self-serious… The mood swing…into violence with a whole lot of bad dudes,…guns and explosions, is startling, crudely choreographed… – [It] sounds better than it plays, largely because Mr. Rogen…looks so earnest and unfunny when playing the hero.”

It currently holds a 70% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, compared to 54% for Harold And Kumar 2 and 87% for Superbad.
