Tucker Max – First Script Review Doesn’t Look Good

tucker max

For those of you who don’t know who Tucker Max is; here’s a short history lesson.

Way back in the day a young man named Tucker started his own personal website (tuckermax.com) and slowly began posting stories from his life on it (you could say he was one of the first bloggers). These stories mostly involved Max hanging out with his friends, insulting strangers, sleeping with women and generally being an asshole to people. However enough people found his site amusing to allow Max to make a living off it and in recent years he has published a couple of books that in turn sold well enough to get him a deal to write a biopic of his own life.

Now that script has been written and the movie is getting made, the first script reviews are starting to come out and they don’t look good. Cecelia from Film industry bloggers had this to say about it:

“Holy crap, It’s terrible. I’m talking Godawful. Even with the offensive factor set aside, it’s in my top 10 worst comedy scripts ever read (out of probably over a thousand). This thing is poorly structured, obvious and predictable at every turn, with flat, one-dimensional characters who ALL sound exactly the same and an ending that falls flatter than humorless girl in a Tucker Max story.”

Now, regardless of whether you find Tucker Max’s sense of humour hilarious or extremely misogynistic it is undeniably fascinating that a movie is being made based on the lifestory of an internet personality. Not a musician, not a poet or novelist, an internet superstar. The only other example of this being done I can think of is the Japanese film Densha Otoko.

I’ll be very interested to see the finished product.

I honestly believe internet “stars” should remain on the internet since none of them are truly “stars” but talentless, self-involved self-promoters who were lucky enough to be the recipients of society’s newest way to receive “your fifteen minutes of fame”.

On a similar note, what is up with T.V.’s current obsession with assholes? No matter where you turn their are shows (in particular reality ones) that feature utterly detestable douchebags (in both male and female form). Its usually also accompanied by rich, beautiful and young.

Hang on, are you including you and me in that Angel Orona?

As for your latter point, nothing’s actually changed, it’s just a sign you’re getting old. I’ve been experiencing the same thing lately.

Of course not us, my friend, we’re actually charming, intelligent and our last name is Tequila.

Maybe you’re right about the old thing but it just seems to be that these current batch of asshole is turned up to eleven.

I have read leaked scripts from this film (as well as Max’s own website stories) and it looks godawful. Now I both appreciate and enjoy fart/crap jokes, toilet humour etc. as much as the next man, and can often find myself laughing (albeitly guiltily) at cruel humour but the medium has to be well written, original and actually funny, i.e. Kevin Smith’s works are full of such references, but are well written original, clever and amusing. Tucker’s film fails dismally on all these counts and serves little more in purpose than to act as a vehicle for the writer’s own oversized ego (oversized in juxtaposition to his own self-supposed “talent”) and succeeds in little more than demostrating once again to the world outside his own website domain and blind-faith followers that the man in question is little more than a sociopath with a wealthy father to bankroll his juvenile endeavors.
