‘Bastards’ Under Fire In Germany

Tarantino’s script for Inglorious Bastards has been leaked in Germany – and it seems certain to cause uproar. Sequences in the film include vengeful Americans strangling, shooting, bashing and scalping German soldiers.

Tobias Kneibe, film editor of the Suddeutsche Zeitung newspaper, has read the script and says, “All the German historians and critics who were left gasping for breath by Tom Cruise and his worthy attempts will be so shocked by Inglorious Bastards that they will savage it on the spot.” Tom Cruise’s Valkyrie was torn a new one by the German press a full year ahead of its release.

Kneibe believes “the collision between Tarantino-style pop culture with the themes of the Holocaust and Jewish revenge (the ‘Bastards’ of the film are Jewish-American Nazi hunters) is unprecedented in Germany and its results are completely unpredictable.” Although he does admit he likes the screenplay.

To add further tension, Tarantino’s choice of filming in Germany means Bastards will almost certainly get German state financing – Not unlike the tax breaks that go to Uwe Boll’s productions.

Tarantino… overrated much?
