Bourne 4 Gets Dreaded ‘Parallel Script’

He’s been shot and left for dead. Then his girlfriend was shot and he was left for dead. Then he chased a bloke about Tangiers for a while. Now he’s back (hopefully after having multiple antibiotics prescribed from swimming in a New York river.)

Matt Damon sets his face to po.

Yes, the man who managed to kill Bond is getting ready for the inevitable summer 2011 blockbuster, but there’s one person who won’t be as involved as he was: Bourne Ultimatum screenwriter George Nolfi.

Nolfi (Ocean’s Twelve, The Sentinel) has written a script but he’s now wrapped up in writing and directing The Adjustment Bureau, an adaptation of Phillip K. Dick short that will reunite him with Bourne himself, Matt Damon. With the September shooting looming larger than the mushroom cloud that Indiana Jones stood under, Nolfi has been forced to step away from the Bourne writing desk.

But rather than rewrite what they have, the production is having newcomer Josh Zetumer come in and write what is described as a ‘parallel’ screenplay. This means a totally new script. The production will go forward with both on the table and then decide at the last minute which to go with, and which elements to incorporate from the other.

It’s rare to write two scripts but it’s becoming increasingly popular in the tentpole movie world. Star Trek: Generations, Fantastic Four: The Rise of the Silver Surfer, and Wolverine commissioned parallel scripts and sometimes had them combined. Those movies turned out well…right? Some might say it points to a lack of project vision when the story is still so wide open at this late stage.

It is unclear then if the film will be an all-new tale or based in any way on the continuing novels now penned by Eric Van Lustbader. Lustbader has written five post-Ultimatum Bourne books – The Bourne Legacy, The Bourne Betrayal, The Bourne Sanction, The Bourne Deception and next year’s The Bourne Objective.

Question is, do we really need another Bourne film? What’s there left to sympathise with? He’s recovered his memory and killed pretty much everybody in the entire CIA and even managed to shock America into acknowledging that the CIA murders people on its own soil. Well, duh.

WHAT??? The man who managed to kill Bond? When did that happen? In a parallel universe? I don’t recall the Bond franchise suffering from the presence of Jason Bourne on the silver screen. Get your facts straight.

I must have missed the parts in the latest two ‘Bond’ movies when Bond stopped being charming and funny and quintessentially British and did a buttload of free-running and fist-fighting instead. Thank you for correcting me.
