The Descent Part 2 – Trailer

the descent-2-trailer.jpg
2005′s excellent The Descent kept to the classic horror premise: a simple idea used to the absolute maximum to create the most scares it can. Empathy for a group of unfortunate women was combined with a skin-crawlingly good understanding of claustrophobia, and some very creepy monsters.

While original writer/director Neil Marshall might be taking a back seat in the ‘executive producer’ role (read: doing nothing and still getting paid), he’s handed the reigns over to the original film’s editor, Jon Harris. This is his directorial debut, so let’s take a look at the latest trailer:

Well, besides the voiceover guy sounding more and more like Tobin Bell’s Jigsaw every day, it seems pretty samey. It’s a near identical premise, with the last movie’s survivor returning, against all reason and sanity, to the cave system that almost killed her. The trailer shows plenty of darkness and promises to have lots of death, but doesn’t seem to quite have that something special that made the first one such a hit.

The Descent: Part 2 sees a UK release on December 4th, with a US release date unconfirmed at the moment.

Now let’s compare this to the original:

I think it shows how starved we are of good horror movies that the first one is considered a classic. It was passable, with good atmosphere early on and a strong score.

This trailer does nothing for me. Looks like a series completely out of ideas.

the first one was considered “excellent”? it definitely doesn’t justify a sequel.

To be fair, there really is only so much you can do with the ‘bunch of girls climb inside the earth’ story.

I’m fairly convinced that somebody in a suit was made to think this was a good idea by a very excited person flapping their arms and yelling, ‘THERE’LL BE MORE GIRLS THIS TIME!’

Yeah it is a very difficult idea to follow up, the options feel unusually limited.

Having seen this last night I have to say it wasn’t as bad as I was expecting. Perfectly passable in my opinion with a few cool set-pieces. As you predict though, a lot of it seems to just be re-treading the first movie (that I do consider to be excellent) but with far less characterization, in fact I’d be hard pressed to remember any of the new characters’ names…

I wish this would come to the US soon, The first one is excellent and a classic, just like Scream 1, and I hope there would be more of this series in the future, it’s pretty refreshing compared to all the humdrum horror flick out there that constantly repeats itself, it’s not everyday that you see an all badass female star cast kick some cavemen ass!
