Blindness Soundtrack

I’ll come right out and say this about the Blindness soundtrack. The music of Uakti is very interesting to listen to. Maybe more so than the film that showcases it. Blindness is a story, heavy in metaphor and its score is a piece, heavy in surrealism.
Uakti is a wonderful Brazilian instrumental band led by composer Marco Antônio Guimarães. Their claim to fame is that they construct their own instruments, mostly out of PVC. In a way, they’re like Blue Man Group, but you know, less lame. They have a great minimalist sound that’s strongly atmospheric. Absolutely perfect for the subject matter.

This is the kind of music that instantly sets the mood. It’s just abstract enough to keep you interested yet hypnotic enough to be peripheral. It’s very reminiscent of the Avant Garde movement made popular by Morricone’s distorted guitars and grunting choirs, replaced now by PVC and a Chori Smetano. If you’re a fan of obscure sounds carefully placed in your scores, then the Blindness soundtrack delivers.

The movie itself has generally been received as a fairly daring failure. I can’t decide yet whether I enjoy this soundtrack.
