Rambo 5 – Science Fiction?

When Rambo 5 was announced, most people assumed the plot would revolve around our favorite geriatric super killer saving his daughter from an American inner-city gang, a concept that floated around the rumor pool back when Rambo (aka Rambo 4) was being scripted.

But it seems that’s not the case. Within the past week Stallone officially announced Rambo 5 and again rumors began, this time about a very dated “super soldier” premise. Rambo would seemingly track down a Dolph Lundgren-esque, governmentally enhanced uber badass that bumbling scientists let escape in the Pacific Northwest.

Well, if that premise didn’t scream DIRECT TO DVD SCI-FI BARGAIN BARREL! to you, then get ready to take your medication for whatever the voices will scream next. According to this voicemail, the fifth Rambo movie will be:

“It’s not some Universal Soldier, it’s not me fighting some super-soldier, it’s actually a feral beast. It’s a … thing. It’s this amalgamation of fury and intelligence and pure, unadulterated rage. It’s before men became … HUman. This is when they were still INhuman.”

Scientist tap into the primitive side of man with horrible results? Does this sound familiar to anyone else?

But surely not. The fifth installment in this straight forward, war-hero revenge franchise cannot be nuking the fridge right into science-fiction territory, can it? Here’s what else Sly had to say:

” … And that’s what makes it uniquely different, it’s like Man’s conscience fighting his dark, dangerous, uncontrollable subconscious. It’s like the plot to Forbidden Planet …”

While I remain dubious, maybe this will be the greatest Rambo movie ever made. I certainly loved the first film and enjoyed the hell out of the rest, including that latest installment where Rambo actually had to call in backup.

In the end, all the males in our country will pay good money, even if it’s just to see ole Rambo team up with Robby the Robot.

Yes, Rambo saving his daughter really fits that world well, since at the end of 4 he went home to reconnect with his dad.

If it is as graphically violent as the last movie, then I am in for the rental. Which is what I did with Rambo 4 and it was pure fun. As far as I’m concerned, I’ve seen enough ‘bad guy kidnaps good guys family’ movies to last me until the end of time. Different is good, even if ridiculous, in my opinion.
