Don Cheadle Replacing Terrence Howard In Iron Man 216.10.08 # News # 2 Comments
Terrence Howard, who played Jim Rhodes/future armor-clad co-hero “War Machine” in IRON MAN, won’t be returning for the sequel.
He was all set to don suit, but instead he’s don Cheadle.
Don Cheadle is a fellow top-shelf African-American actor, who has displayed his acting brilliance in such films as CRASH, BOOGIE NIGHTS and the OCEAN series (gotta love that Cockney accent!). In fact Marvel indicated it had planned on working with Cheadle in the past; but his prospective role in that project had ended up going in another direction.
Marvel has zipped lips over the reason for Howard’s departure but a close source has indicated negotiations fell through over financial differences, “among other reasons”. Is it just me or does that final phrase “among other reasons” sound a little too cryptic . . . Even by Hollywood’s standards. As a master of assumption I’m gonna go with this being yet another case of good, old-fashioned “creative differences”. I will further elaborate on my theory by stating that Howard had wanted the sequel’s script to feature a surprise ending where War Machine suddenly turns on Iron Man and pummels him down into a single, slightly dented tin can.
Speaking of the sequel script, Justin Theroux (co-writer of the hilarious TROPIC THUNDER, and an actor who played, strangely enough, the film director in David Lynch’s MULHOLLAND DRIVE) is penning the screenplay. The supercool Jon Favreau is back to helm. Robert Downey Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow (as Stark’s put-upon assistant/love interest Pepper Potts) are also returning.
