Movie Moron Forum / Movie News / Re: Prepare to 'Scream' again

The first one was great - a real shocker especially with Drew Barrymore dying really early on. Two and three were terrible, as with all horror sequels. Kevin Williamson should leave Scream in the grave and come up with something new already!

Movie Moron Forum / Movie News / Blogging your way to the movies
|

Bloggers seem to have taken on God-like status right now and Julie and Julia, out in August, is a case in point. In the film, frustrated office worker Julie Powell, played by Amy Adams, tries to get herself out of a rut by attempting to cook all 524 recipes in Julia Child's Mastering the Art of French Cooking in one year. So far, so whatever. But the real Julie Powell made the wise decision to chronicle her attempt online and her blog (the Julie/Julia Project) developed a huge following – hence the movie. The film, written and directed by chick-flick supremo Nora Ephron, also focuses on American food legend Julia Child herself (Meryl Streep). It covers the period that Child and her diplomat husband Paul spent in Paris during the Forties and Fifties, during which he was investigated by Senator Joseph McCarthy for supposed communist ties and she honed her knowledge of French cookery, eventually introducing it to America. The flashback sections sound like an interesting set of stories in themselves. But let’s be honest, if Julie Powell hadn’t opted to share her experiences with her fellow foodies online, Child’s story would probably never have come to film. Movie Moron Forum / Movie News / Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes - a leap too far?
|
on: June 02, 2009, 08:25:33 AM
|
With Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes due for release in December, fans of the books are already getting hot under the collar. There’s the to-be-expected grumbling about the liberties being taken with the sleuth legend and some are going so far as to say that Sir Arthur C.D. must be turning in his grave . The advance trailer (see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S4K3aM5H5KM) seems to confirm rumours that Ritchie has gone for a sexier, more action-oriented Holmes, with Robert Downey Jnr. sword-fighting, bare-knuckle-brawling and getting up close and personal with Rachel McAdams as Irene Adler. But is this such a leap? I’ve read most of the Holmes stories and it’s got to be said, he’d give some of today’s rock stars a run for their money in terms of his drug use. He’s an enthusiastic cocaine user and occasionally injects morphine as well. As for weapons training and martial arts, Holmes and Watson both carry canes and pistols, but the guns don’t get much use, only being used seven times in all the stories. Although Watson describes Holmes as an expert with a sword he never actually demonstrates this in the books. However, Holmes is more than willing to use his fists. In The Sign of the Four, Holmes introduces himself to a prize-fighter as: "The amateur who fought three rounds with you at Alison's rooms on the night of your benefit four years back." McMurdo responds by saying, "Ah, you're one that has wasted your gifts, you have! You might have aimed high, if you had joined the fancy." In "The Adventure of the Empty House", Holmes tells Watson how he used martial arts to overcome uber-villain Professor Moriarty at the Reichenbach Falls. He states that "I have some knowledge, however, of baritsu, or the Japanese system of wrestling, which has more than once been very useful to me." The biggest change Ritchie may be making in terms of Holmes’ character is in relation to the opposite sex. Holmes seems pretty asexual in general and the the only woman he ever show major interest in is Irene Adler. According to Watson, she was referred to on more than one occasion by Holmes as "The Woman". Though she only appears in A Scandal in Bohemia, she’s mentioned in multiple other Holmes stories. However, it is important to point out that Watson says, "It was not that he felt any emotion akin to love for Irene Adler." It was the thrill of being beaten by an adversary, especially a woman, that made Holmes fascinated with her. The scriptwriter obviously felt this wasn’t exciting enough, hence the apparent on-screen shenanigans in Ritchie’s version. Either way, I can’t wait to see it and it’ll be an interesting addition to the (long) list of movies about Sherlock Holmes

Movie Moron Forum / Movie News / Judd Apatow brings us Year One
|
on: June 02, 2009, 07:42:52 AM

I’m a sucker for a comedy so I can’t wait to see Year One – the latest from Judd Apatow’s stable, which is out on June 19th. It concerns a pair of layabout hunter-gatherers who are banished from their tribe for not pulling their weight and end up embarking on “an epic journey around the ancient world”, apparently. Anyway, it’s written and directed by Harold Ramis, produced by Apatow and stars Jack Black, Michael Cera, David Cross, Christopher Mintz-Plasse and Hank Azaria as well as one my favourite character actors, Oliver Platt. With this bunch in the mix, it’s got to have some laughs! You can see the trailer here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RTNBwIAY9ZoIt all begs the question though, are we in a situation where NO comedies get made without Apatow’s involvement? It seems like every funny movie out there is written, produced or directed by him, or stars his main group of actors. And is there a valid argument that comedy performers have a certain shelf life before the public gets tired of them? It’s happened already with the Frat Pack – maybe Cera, Seth Rogen, Jonah Hill et al should enjoy their glory period while it lasts!

She spends the whole time whining, falling over things and getting injured or putting herself and others in unnecessary danger and guilt-tripping over it. That's basically the plot of all four books. Plus she goes on and on about how great the vampires are, when they sound snobbish and kind of boring, while all the while ignoring all her other family and friends.
Kristen Stewart actually did a good job with making her likeable in Twilight but I wish her luck keeping that up as the series goes on.

Bruce Campbell would be great. The third movie had about four villains if I remember right - Venom, Sandman, Harry as The Green Goblin and Spiderman's inner psyche or something like that!
The most criminal thing in the movie, though, was Tobey Maguire's attempts at dancing. I was watching through my fingers and I still shudder at it now...

I saw the first one without reading the books and now I've read all four Twilight books I don't know can I stick watching New Moon. Bella must be the only heroine in history to get MORE annoying as a series of books goes on, until by book 4 you're praying for someone to kill her.

Movie Moron Forum / Movie News / Pictures of Russell Crowe as Robin Hood
|
on: May 25, 2009, 04:27:22 PM

The Daily Mail's printed some great pictures of Russell Crowe in Ridley Scott's Robin Hood (or Nottingham, as it's also being called). Robin Crowe is the oldest actor to play Robin on film (he's 45) and it was rumored at the start that he would be playing both Robin AND the Sheriff of Nottingham, which would have been brilliant. Sadly, he's only playing one part now, albeit one of the most iconic parts in adventure movies. I can't wait to see this movie, particularly seeing as Crowe has been reunited with his Gladiator director Scott (I'm overlooking that other film they did together, A Good Year, which was terrible). Here are the pictures, which show the Sheriff's men doing what they do best (i.e. terrorising peasants) and Robin himself with a bow and arrow, strangely enough: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-1186570/Sneak-peek-The-Sheriff-Nottinghams-men-ravage-village-Ridley-Scotts-new-Robin-Hood-movie.html

Movie Moron Forum / Movie News / Kate Beckinsale in Whiteout
|
on: May 25, 2009, 04:16:38 PM
|
Kate Beckinsale is a good actress but even her biggest fans would have to admit that the movies she's done since moving to Hollywood haven't been great. She hasn't had a breakout hit apart from Underworld and the less said about Pearl Harbor, Van Helsing and Vacancy the better. Well, that breakout film could be Whiteout. Based on a series of graphic novels by Greg Rucka, this is a new entry in the under-utilised genre that is Antarctic whodunnits. Beckinsale plays a U.S. Marshal reluctantly stationed in Antarctica at a research centre (sounds like the world's worst job, right?). Three days before she's due to leave for the States, a body is found and she finds herself conducting a murder investigation. But winter is only days away and she must identify the killer before months of darkness close in.... I like the sound of this one! It's not out until September but you can see a poster for it here: http://www.ioncinema.com/movie/id/537/whiteout

Movie Moron Forum / Movie News / Joe Dante Says No to Bats!
|
on: May 25, 2009, 03:55:29 PM
|
I've been a big fan of Joe Dante ever since I was a kid. He gave me and most of my generation childhood nightmares with the Gremlins movies, so I was excited to hear that he would be coming out of virtual retirement to direct two movies - The Hole and Bats Out of Hell. Both sounded cool, but Bats Out of Hell sounded insane. It was going to be the grisly tale of people who hijack a plane just so they can knock off the group of vampires that are travelling in first class. I had imagined that blood and hair were going to hit the fan. Well, not so. According to Horror Movies and Stuff, Joe says it's off - and not just without him, off period. Read the full sad tale here http://www3.webng.com/horrormoviesandstuff/DanteUpdatesBatOutOfHell.htmlThe Hole, however, is still happening. It sounds a bit like The Amityville Horror. Check it out - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1085779/
