If you haven't seen the movie (see: living in a cave) then don't read any further, as there will undoubtedly be spoilers to follow.  At the end of Dark Knight, Harvey Dent's fate was left a tad bit ambiguous.  While superficially it seemed sure that Two-Face was dead, upon repeat viewings there became a slight possibility that Harvey Two-Face was indeed still alive at The Dark Knight and could have made a return in Batman 3.

Eckhart asked Nolan about whether or not there was a possibility he would return for a sequel, to which the director delivered a flat "No way".  Nolan confirmed that Harvey is in fact dead, and subsequently silenced half of the "bat chatter" on the internet.

Warner Bros. have stated that they would like to have the third Batman movie released in 2011.  No official plans have yet been announced.

Well then Nolan made a big mistake. What a waste of that character.

It's not too dissimilar to what they did to Venom in Spider-man 3. Introduced him late, missed the point of what made him an interesting villain, then killed him off. At least they've got the goo to bring Venom back. No Two-Face goo.

Despite the big shift from Dent's personality in the comics, I felt he was used well.  Yeah, it would've been cool to see the split personality come out, but the way the character was set up didn't necessarily lead to his split-personality being a pay-off.

Two-Face is one of my favorite villains in Batman, so I would obviously like to see more of him, but when I take that bias out and look at Dark Knight without using my pre-existing "bat knowledge", I'm sufficiently satisfied with what they did with him.

no crap what the hell? waste of a character for sure!  Imean we dont even get to see the real evil side of two face, that is the only thing to really look forward too with another sequel since there cannot be another wonderful performance by the late great Heath Ledger!

At the end of the day, regardless Nolan says it, Eckhart says it, the novel says it, the script says it, etc - if he broke his neck, they would have shown it graphically in the movie. Because they didn't, Nolan or anyone else who carries on the franchise can retcon that he didn't die. So to me, he's not dead, he's just not alive until someone brings him back. That scene was too unemphatic to be death for certain.
