Judd Apatow is one of my favorite people in the movie business, he is a brilliant writer/director/producer, he has created hit films such as, 40yr Old Virgin, Anchorman, Talladega Nights, Knocked Up, Walk Hard, Superbad, Drillbit Taylor, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Pineapple Express, and many other films!
Judd Apatow started off being roomates with Adam Sandlar in college. Imagine how fun that was, them too together in there early twenties must of been a blast! He then went on to executive producing The Ben Stiller Show (1992-1993.)
Apatow's first big film was Heavy Weights(1995), I really liked this movie alot when I was younger and still enjoy it till this day. Apatow co-wrote and produced this movie with Steven Brill. The film was about a group of plump kids that were tricked into going to a summer camp, but turned out to be a fat camp. They are promised weight loss and fun times, but that quickly ends when they find out that the camp is a hell hole and its ran by a pyscho fittness instructor (Ben Stiller.) Ben Stiller's performance is so good, he is hilarious, you gotta see this movie, it is defintley worth watching! This is one for the whole family to enjoy, I am pretty sure that Disney was the production company.
After that he became one of the producers of the animated show The Critic (1994-1995), which I always loved when I was growing up. Jon Lovitz was absolutely outstanding in that show, The Critic should go down as a classic!
Judd also wrote and produced Celtic Pride (1996), I have only seen this film once and it was when it first came out so I dont remeber too much of the film. But I remember that i liked it. It starred Damon Wayans, Dan Aykroyd and Daniel Stern. The movie was about two crazy Boston Celtic fanatics (Aykroyd & Stern) that kidnap the opposing team's star player (Wayans), to give their team a better shot at winning the championship. I defintely got to re-watch this film, and I advise everyone to check it out!
Judd also hit a big break when he produced The Cable Guy (1996) along side his good friend Ben Stiller who directed the film. The movie starred Jim Carrey, Mathew Broderick, Leslie Mann and Jack Black. I dont really feel the need to explain too much about this movie because everyone pretty much knows about it, and if you havent seen this film then I strongley urge you to do so. Jim Carrey in his prime! On the set of The Cable Guy he met his today wife Leslie Mann, in which he has two daughters with, Maude and Iris.
After The Cable Guy, Apatow went on to producing The Larry Sanders Show (1993-1998) , which was a comedy and talk show, I didnt catch too much of this when it aired on TV, but I have watched episodes on the internet and it is pretty funny, give it a checkout! It lasted about 5 years on TV, they were doing something right!
Then Judd Apatow went on created Freaks and Geeks(1999-2000) with Paul Feig. I love this show so much! I have seen every episode, This show was so brilliantly written and produced. The characters were so real life, they delt with real life problems that alot of people go through. I am so sad this show was canceled, it was really good. It starred James Franco, Seth Rogen, Jason Segal, Linda Cardellini, John Francis Dales, Martin Starr, Sam Leviene and Joe Flaherty, plus many more. This show was just too real for people at that time and maybe today, I STRONGLEY advise everyone to peep this show out, rent it, buy it, netflix it, do what ever you gotta do to see this! You wont be disapointed!
His next major show was Undeclared (2001-2003), Its was a show about college students and there majors with the problems that arise during college. This show is very funny I also advise people to check this out for sure! It starred Jay Baruchel, Seth Rogen, Carla Gallo, Charlie Hunnam and Monica Keena. This show is awesome I like it like how I like Freeks and Geeks, it has Judd Apatow written all over it!
Not too long after Undeclared Judd got back into films and went on to produce the hit comedy Anchorman (2004). The film was directed by Adam McKay, and written by Will Ferrell and McKay. Anchorman recieved buzz all over, this is defintley one of Will Ferrell's best films, and that opinion is widely shared amoung alot of people! The film was really funny, it starred Will Ferrell, Christina Applegate, Paul Rudd, Steve Carrell and David Koechiner, if you havent seen this movie then do so!! quick!
Apatow's next film he went on to do was Kicking and Screaming (2005), it starred Will Ferrel and Robert Duval. The movie was about a man (Ferrell) that grew up with a very competive father, and ended up taking that nature in coaching a kids soccer team. It is really funny the way he yells at the kids, this film is a movie that the whole family can enjoy, and is worth watching if you like to laugh.
After Kicking and Screaming Judd went on to producing the smash hit 40yr Old Virgin (2005.) This was Judd Apatow's first film he wrote, directed and produced by himself, this is the first film that can be officially titled a Judd Apatow film. This movie is so brilliant in so many ways. This film was the official landmark to Apatow films, it was the birth of his comedies. The movie starred Steve Carrell, Romany Malco, Seth Rogen, Paul Rudd and many more. The film is about a 40yr old man thatis a virgin and his co-workers trying to help him pop his cherry. The co-workers are the funniest part of the movie, especially Romany Malco, he totally set the film off, its worth watching just for Malco's performance. Seth Rogen and Paul Rudd make excellent additions as well, its funny how each person uses there own methods to help Steve Carrell's character to get laid. Overall this film is great, one of my favorite films of all time. This movie paved a road for all the Apatow films that came out afterwards. This is a movie that needs to sit in everyones collection, if you havent seen this film then I feel sorry for you, go buy it and you'll be majorly pleased!!! GO DO IT NOW!
Judd next big film was Talladega Nights (2006), Adam McKay directed this film and wrote it with Will Ferrell. The movie starred Will Ferrell, John C. Rilley and Sacha Baron Cohen (from the Borat film and Ali G Show), This movie was a great film too, one of Will Ferrell highlights as well. I really enjoyed John C. Rilley's role in this film, he was so funny, I personally liked his character the best. This film is a must see, I can watch this movie anytime!
2007 was a big year for Judd Apatow he had two big box office hits, first was Knocked Up. This film is problay my favorite Apatow film of all, its defintely a toss up between 40yr Old Virgin and this movie. Knocked Up was Judd's second film that he wrote, directed and produced by himself. This film was so brilliant, it was casted well, directed well, produced well, and mainly written well! Apatow did an amazing Job with this film. The cast worked so well with eachother, Seth Rogen, Katherine Heigl, Lesli Mann, Paul Rudd, Jonah Hill, Jason Segal, Jay Baruchel and Martin Starr plus many more. They all brought their own comedy to the film, which set it off. I again STRONGLEY advise everyone to watch this movie, it is a great comedy with some real life thrown into it, it is so great, one of my favorite films of all times, I saw it twice in theatres, it is that good!
Judd's other big smash hit in 2007 was Superbad, everyone loved this film, it is fall out your seat funny. It was directed by Greg Motolla and written by Seth Rogen and lifelong friend Evan Goldberg and Judd Apatow. Seth and Evan started writng this movie when they were 13, now thats amazing! Superbad starred Jonah Hill, Michael Cera, Christopher Mintz Plasse, Seth Rogen and Bill Hader. The movie is about three young high school students trying to get to a party and all the complications that come along during the day. Superbad is one of the funniest movies of all time, I reccommend this film to all! Except my parents they wouldnt enjoy it too much.
Apatow's next film was Walk Hard: The Dewy Cox Story which also came out in 2007, Judd produced and co wrote it with Jake Kasdan, Jake Kasdan also directed it too. The film starred John C. Rilley, Matt Besser and Tim Medows. The movie is about the trials and tribulations of Dewy Cox. I loved this movie so much I laughed my ass off the whole time, it was really good, I reccommend this movie to all!
After Walk Hard Apatow produced Forgetting Sarah Marshall m(2008). The film was directed by Nicholas Stoller and written by Jason Segal. The movie starred Jason Segal, Kristen Bell, Mila Kunis, Russel Brand with Bill Hader, Jonah Hill and Paul Rudd. The film is about a guy who has recently broken up with his girfriend, so he takes a trip to get away then runs into her at the island he went to, she is with her new boyfriend (Russel Brand) which is a pop star. Brands performance really makes the film worth seeing for that alone, he is so funny! Jason Segal did a good job on writing the movie, there are some pretty raunchy scenes, too explicit for children. Defintley give the movie a look into!
Judd's next film in his line up was Drillbit Taylor (2008). It was directed by Steven Brill and written by Kristofor Brown and Seth Rogen. The film starred Owen Wilson, Leslie Mann, Danny R. McBride, plus a wonderful cast of kids. The movie is about a few high school freshmans that are being tormented by high school bullies, they hire a bodyguard (Wilson) to protect them. The film is really good and funny. Danny McBride's role is absolutey hilarious, this is a film for the whole family to enjoy, I reccommend this movie to everyone!
Next for Judd Apatow was Step Brothers, he once again teamed up with Adam McKay who directed the movie and wrote it with Will Ferrell as well. The movie teamed up John C. Rilley and Will Ferrell again to set off another good comedy. The film is about two older men who both still live with there parents, that become step brothers when one of each of their parents marry. They end up living with eachother in the same house as both of there parents. At first they hate eachother and they do cruel things to one another, then they realize that they have alot in common and become best friends. This film is really funny with alot of explicit language. If you liked Anchorman and Talladega nights then defintely watch this one!
Apatow's last film that hit theatres was Pineapple Express. It was directed David Gorden Green, and written by Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg and Judd Apatow. I loved this film it was so great! It Starred James Franco and Seth Rogen with Danny R. McBride, Kevin Corrigan and Craig Robinson. James Franco set this film off, he was hilarious! His unawareness in the movie just cracked my stuff up! I also really enjoyed Craig Robinson's role, he made me laugh every time he hit the screen! This film was great from the first scene to the last scene, I havent seen a comedy/action film in a long time. I think this was one of the Apatow's best films! I went to go see it on opening night, it was a Wensday, and it was so sold out all night, but the smart guy I am I bought my tickets before hand! I give this movie two BIG thumbs up!! GO SEE IT!
Well that about wraps up Judd Apatows films, I hope you enjoyed this piece I wrote on Judd Apatow's films! Dont miss his upcoming films, Year One that is written and directed by Harold Ramis, it stars Jack Black, Michael Cera, Oliva Wilde, Oliver Platt, Vinne Jones and many many more! The movie takes place in biblical times and it is about two men (Black and Cera) that are banished from their village, and sent on an epic journey through ancient times, it sounds really good and I am really looking forward to this film, the release date is set for June 19th 2009. Judd also has another film written/directed/produced by himself called Funny People, it stars Seth Rogen, Adam Sandlar, Leslie Mann, Jonah Hill and Jason Schartzman, there is not too much released on the plot, but so far the cast is excellent, and its set to hit theatres July 31st 2009!!
