It was my Girlfriend's night to choose movies. I wanted to see Quarantine, but she said no to that. I was trying to steer her towards seeing the dog-talking Chihuaua one, but too kiddie for her, so she picked one with Richard Gere and Diane Lane and after reading the synopsis, I thought, "oh shit" a romantic movie. Sleepy time for me.
But you see, that is where I was wrong. One Night in Rodanthe  is a drama with romantic overtones thrown in. What surprised me was the story-> It was down to earth, simplistic and
real-life. Its something that many people can relate to and that is what kept me interested in watching it to the end.  Plus, there was great character development. Richard Gere and Diane Lane played their parts very well and really got into character.
Very briefly, Diane Lane's character is a seperated mom with 2 kids. Her husband cheated on her with her friend 7 months ago and now he wants to get back with her. Her best friend who runs a bed and breakfast in Rodanthe wants her to house sit while she goes on vacation. Diane agrees as she figures this would be a great opportunity for alone time to seriously think about her relationship.  Enter Richard Gere. A mysterious and angry man at first. You learn later on that he is a doctor who is traumatized after losing a patient to a routine surgery. He travels to Rodanthe to speak to the surviving family members. He also just happened to book a room at the B & B where Diane Lane is at.  So, throw in a storm on a scary dark night with lots of wind and these 2 people find love. But there is much more to it than that. I won't go into detail cuz it would spoil things.
This movie is a chick flick plain and simple. BUT, its a movie that a guy could go to and not get bored with thanks to its great storyline and acting. If your GF or wife wants to see a non-violent movie, you can get some brownie points by suggesting to see this film. It may not be a man-movie, but at least you won't fall asleep. I would pay matinee and full price for this one.

StinkingBob it sounds like you've got to put your foot down in that relationship.

Then again I found the trailer quite appealing in a funny sort of way. Yes, it's a love story but it's about two cynical adults who are pretty sensible and a long way from teenage silliness.

I think I'll take your advice and keep it in store for a day when I have to showing a caring side to some lucky girlfriend.

PS Knowing several doctors, the notion that one of them would be traumatised by losing a patient is ridiculous.

LOL!!!
If I put my foot down, I get no action if you know what I mean. So we compromise.

Made of honoe was a romantic comedy, but silly. Good for laughs, happy ending et all.
One Night in Rodanthe is a more realistic story, something females can relate to. No comedy there. No funny moments. Just drama.
Also, doctors have to have that mind-set whereby they can't get emotionally involved with patients (not romantic) whereby if a patient dies, they feel really really bad. BUT I am sure there are some doctors that do. You know, everything is going fine during a routine operation and then your patient croaks and you know you didn't do anything wrong.
Richard Gere does play it well. I give the man kudos. He can act.
So yeah, mark this movie down on your dvd list of dramas with a romantic side so when that lucky girl comes along, you can show her your feminine side! Women love that thing.
