Here are a few I came up with -

Scared by an usually noisy cat.

African-American dies early.

Laughing and breathing a sigh of relief right before a terrible thing happens.

Tripping over
How many of you have ever tripped over and fallen flat while running? You can probably remember no more than twice in your lifetime.

Closing the bathroom mirror and seeing the reflection of someone horrible.
As seen in: An American Werewolf In London

Someone greets somebody by coming up behind them and putting a hand on their shoulder, accidentally scaring them.
When was the last time you met someone and you put your hand on their shoulder before saying anything?
As seen in: Halloween

Leave yours below, with any movie they featured in.

Don't we have proof here on the site that people do in fact escape in the most inconvenient way possible when chased by killers?

To contribute: all children have ulterior motives.
Serial killers have elaborate backstories and carefully oriented lighting to hide their face.  Masks also go a long ways.

- African-American dies early... and to add to that, they're always the 'comic relief' character
- The slut and jock die (usually they're dating), the geek will die, the virginal girl who said no to the joint will survive
- Cars will never start
- Creepy voices and shadows seen out of the corner of the eye
- Some tragic backstory, sometimes connected to the heroine
- Drugs, alcohol, sex, arrogance and ignorance equal death
- Red herrings, you'll find them everywhere... 'Really, wow, and I thought it was him who was the killer...'
- Women's clothes will fall off or become extremely wet and see through
- Gay men do not exist, except in comical stereotype roles
- The killer is knocked unconscious so the heroine drops the weapon and walks away... FINISH HIM OFF!!!

Don't all those things actually happen when a killer is on the loose?

Also here's another... everything is silent then suddenly the loud phone makes the victim jump, usually followed a second later by the killer/monster pouncing out.   It's a similar tool to the cat jumping out

The glory days of Eric Stoltz are long behind us.  Ginger cinema is a thing of the past

Back in the old days they didn't have to worry about cell phones, but now they have to devote at least 2 minutes in every horror movie just to explain why it can't be used. Someone should compile a video of all the "my cell phone doesn't have reception" moments in horror films.
