One of the films that caught my eye earlier this year when it was making the rounds at all the film festivals was JCVD, a film starring Jean-Claude Van Damme, which is about Jean-Claude Van Damme. Now bear with me. Van Damme plays a fictionalized version of himself, an action movie star that is past his prime and down on his luck, his bank account is empty and he is in the middle of a legal battle with his wife over custody of his daughter. Amid all this, he decides to return the country of his birth (Brussels) to try and find some tranquility, unfortunately he then becomes mixed up in a bank robbery that goes wrong and he has to step up to plate to fix his sorry situation. The first trailer for the film was just released, and you can see it below:
If you had told me a year ago that I would be looking forward to the next film from Jean Claude Van Damme I would have asked for a hit of whatever you were smoking but I really am excited to see how this action/satire turns out. It seems to be a trend in Hollywood for stars who have fallen from grace to work their way back into favor by starring in these kind of brilliant little quirky films (it worked for John Travolta with Pulp Fiction and Kevin Costner with Mr. Brooks) which just goes to show how a few well chosen projects can gain you more respect than dozens of big-budget cash-ins.
JCVD is having a limited release in the US on the 7th of November. I urge you to go out of your way to see it because we need more of these original ideas coming out of Hollywood and the only thing the studios understand is how much money ends up in their pockets.
