So I read the AIC interview with Paul Giamatti about how he loved Bubba Ho-Tep, and since it bored me to tears I considered re-watching it. Then I IMDBed it and found that it was written and directed by the dude that wrote and directed all four (and possibly soon to be 5) Phantasm movies.

Now, my only connection to these films has been through forum discussions on this site and short vid clips on YouTube. But from what I've seen and heard, these are awesome films.

So, I went to research, possibly to write a post about them, etc. And it turns out that Phantasm II (which might be the fan favorite) is out of print in Region 1 DVD. Apparently the director is in the middle of a legal dispute for the rights because he wants to release a boxed set in the States.

Old copies of Pt. 2, Reg 1, go for over $100 on eBay! WTF?!

Phantasm 1, 3, and 4 are all available in the states, but does anyone know how I can get my hands on 2? No rush, just curious to see the films.

And how is it that a major studio with tons of money can't come up with a solution to make everyone happy, cause even if they ahve to give the director some money, they can still make bank on a boxed set!

Yeah the Phantasm movies are awesome!!!!! I have talked to Sheridan about part 2's release, he has some hlepful info on that. I have seen the dvd on amazon for pretty cheap, your best bet would be to get it on VHS.

Yeah, T Ross brought this to my attention just a couple of weeks ago.

Here's what I dug up from a forum:

MGM produced 1, 3, and 4. But Universal Studios produced 2 and has no plans for a dvd release. Why that is, only studios know why they make the stupid decisions they do.
Region 2 releases are easier to be made since copyright issues are differ in other countries. I'm sure someone else can explain it better than I can. But that is the gist of it.

I own it on region 2, and you can still get it here.

Finally, this discussion has some useful info:

If you're still after the second movie and have a multi region DVD player you can get all four in a sphere boxset on region 2.  Well worth it if you're a fan!

Wow you just reminded me how much I wanted to watch Bubba Ho-Tep! It was on tv a while ago and I just never got around to seeing it but I really wanted too, it just sounded so stupid I couldn't resist.
Never got around to seeing Phantasm either, sounds good though i'll be watching that soon.
As for Phantasm 2 maybe try your local library? A movie I really wanted to watch The Cook The Thief His Wife & Her Lover (good movie btw) has been discontinued in region 1 for a while and is also mad expensive $95-100 for a dvd but one day while searching at the library I found it on vhs, maybe you'll find what your looking for too.

Since I haven't seen Bubba Ho-Tep here is the description from nexflix I think it about sums it up.
"Elvis Presley (Bruce Campbell) is an elderly resident in an East Texas rest home; seems he switched identities with an impersonator years before his "death" and then missed his chance to switch back. The King teams up with Jack (Ossie Davis), a fellow nursing home resident who thinks he's John F. Kennedy, and the two old codgers prepare to battle an evil Egyptian entity that's chosen their long-term care facility as its happy hunting grounds."

The Cook The Thief His Wife & Her Lover is about the wife (Helen Mirran) of an obnoxious and ruthless crime boss (Richard Bohringer). She basically starts an affair with a man who frequents her husbands restaurant and as these things typically go she sneaks around behind her husbands back successfully, for a while. But as all good things come to an end he finds out and obviously isn't very happy. I dont want to ruin anything but the ending is pretty disgusting, but very suiting for the film, I loved it.... If you can I really encourage you to see it.

Here is a link to a clip from youtube, it says scene 1 but its actually quite a bit into the film.

Snagged the first two Phantasms off an internet site (watch-movies.net) and watched them both back to back - loved them both. The SOUNDS are so scary! And the "henchmen" are so ridiculous. Such a riot. Alternates between ludicrious and terrifying, somehow managed to find a magic line between the two and walk it. Much like Evil Dead, but with a more serious vibe.

The second one really takes a page for Raimi's book of the dead with the whole "constructing cool weapons" bit and it's a bit more gory action instead of suspenseful creepiness.

Bubba-Ho Tep is worth a watch, but the synopsis is a lot more entertaining than the movie. It's actually a bit slow and has large sections without humor or gore, which are it's two selling points.

The part were Bruce Campbell battles a "big bitch cockroach" is fantastic, as is the "Resevoir Dogs in a Walker" scene. Those moments are total gold. The rest was a yawn fest.

Just watched Bubba Ho-Tep last night and I can see why you got bored. Basically all the parts with Campbell just talking about the past and himself are boring as hell but I have to say a lot of the dialogue between Elvis and Kennedy was hilarious, especially the whole soul sucking thing. It could have been a lot better without Elvis feeling sorry for himself so often.

To all those who celebrate - Happy Thanksgiving

I don't celebrate it myself, but same to you Tori, and to everyone else.

Altogether now, 'have a very Phantasm II Thanksgiving'.

Yeah, I had a lot of hope for Bubba Nosferatu, but Bruce backing out due to creative differences doesn't bode well ... though they snagged Paul Giamatti to play a villain, so there's that.

Bubba Ho Tep is a classic example of great premise, great cast, but not mining the material for everything it has.

Happy Thanksgiving as well. Carve the bird with flying metal space balls.
