George Romero's next entry into the zombie genre he almost single-handedly created will continue the theme of using zombies as allegories for more realistic problems with society.

From USA Today:
Quote
The 2009 release, which is filming in and around Toronto, doesn't have a title yet. But it does have a concept. "It's about tribalism," says Romero about the story that unfolds on a small island a couple of weeks after the original outbreak in 1968's Night of the Living Dead. "There are two factions. It's the idea that even when faced with a crisis, tribal concerns about power control people's motives."

One side wants to kill off zombified loved ones before cannibalistic urges strike. The other would rather wait to see if there is a cure for such cravings. "They want to leave Grandma in the rocking chair for a while longer," he says. "It's not a good idea."

Romero also claims that the new film will be a departure from the critical flop that was his last film 'Diary of the Dead'...

Quote
"Diary was like Night. It had a brooding personality," he says. This one is more like 1978's Dawn of the Dead, "with a lot of action."

Characters will apparently be reprised from both 'Diary' and 'Land of the Dead' which I think (though I could be wrong) is the first time Romero has carried characters over to other films in his Zombie saga. Along with the interview some early photos have been released of the zombies, who look fairly standard so far.

I must be honest, 'Diary' didn't exactly blow my mind. Yet, as a Pittsburgher, I must stay faithful.

It's a lot more like a secret club this way.

Diary was nothing like Night of the Living Dead, in theme, quality, fright, execution, or social commentary. The fact that he compares the two really worries me. I couldn't make it through Diary, it was worse than Monkey Shines!

Don't get me wrong, I LOVED watching Money Shines. I just thought it was hilarious!  Now THAT sex scene needs to be on the awkward list.
