It seems that over the past few weeks a heated bidding war has been going on between the movie studios for a hot new property, and today it came out that that Universal have ended up on top with the rights to the adaptation. Sounds fairly standard, right? The only issues are that the property in question is a video game, and the video game hasn't even been announced yet!

From Slashfilm
Quote
The Electronic Arts game in question is being called internally “Dante’s Inferno” and is a modern interpretation of the poem. Written by Dante Alighieri in the early 1300’s, the narrative poem describes Dante’s imaginary journey through the nine circles of hell where they see sinners being punished for their sins on Earth.

In my opinion, this is just another step down the path to creative bankruptcy for the major Hollywood studios. I find it shameful that they are so bereft of original ideas that they are plundering video game concepts, before the concepts have even been proven successful.

I'm fairly sure there are thousands of screenwriters out there with ideas just as good as this one that are available for a damn sight less money.

The thing I find really baffling about this story is that video game movies in general aren't even successful (or good for that matter). I don't know that the studios can be thinking. It just smacks of desperation to me. What do you guys think?

I haven't heard anything about the new Mortal Kombat movie other than the idea is being knocked around.

At one time imdb.com had a couple Masters of Horror writers attatched to it, then that went away. That had me a littl excited, I think Mortal Kombat should have blood and gore!

If Dragonball does well, I imagine that will speed up the process. I'm not sure it will though.

Why did they buy the rights to the video game when they could have the rights to the book for free?

Because now they can release the game and the movie around the same time!  People would be playing the game going "oh man, this is so cool.  I wish there were a movie of it!"  Then they could go outside and realize there is.

Agreed on the suckage of this idea.
