Dark Knight is definitely my top so far. Hellboy 2 was another absolute treat for me, just an amazing spectacle. Others I'd include would be Machine Girl, Wall-E, and Forgetting Sarah Marshall.

There's only one cinemagoing experience I truly enjoyed this year.
For me, The Dark Knight was a let-down in a lot of respects. As I've ranted on elsewhere - too many issues from his ridiculous voice to the redundant barge sequence, to the mega-see-everywhere computer, the lack of a split personality in Two Face (instead he was just out for revenge like Steven Seagal), to the dvd-quality-drama standoff with Gordon. Not to say there wasn't a lot to enjoy in there.
Iron Man was a solid superhero picture but it's not even close to the likes of Terminator 2, or Aliens or watching Jurassic Park for the first time - stuff that really blew you away.
Other decent films included The Incredible Hulk, Jumper (why does everyone hate this??), and Wanted.
My second best cinemagoing experience in 2008 was Beowulf, not because it was an amazing film (it would be dull as hell on dvd), but watching it in 3-D and seeing how it used the medium was at least refreshing. I really felt 'transported' to that mead hall.
The number 1 most enjoyable was Cloverfield. Not because of the hype or because I give a shit about J.J., but because NOT revealing the monster for once was genius, and the extremely clever way it was shot and the fact it was, hell, genuinely experimental in how it was done. Please Hollywood make more films shot in that style that aren't horrors - it really put you in the moment in the way traditional cinema can't.
Imagine a high altitude disaster movie - filmed in the Cloverfield style - in IMAX 3-D. That would be truly incredible to experience. ...But it'll take 10 years for them to figure that out.
Worst of the year was Indiana Jones 4. My God that was awful. What made it worse was how many people passionately thought the total opposite. The only thing worse than a shit film is a shit film with a fanatical army of people defending it to the death. We had at least one regular reader quit the site permanently just because we gave it a negative review.

Oh My God i cant belive i forgot about Indiana Jones! I think I just tried to forget that it even exsited! I agree that Indana Jone s was the worst movie of 2008!
Oh I didnt like Jumper because the story was too then, an it had no closesure at all, you are just left stuck at the end, the previews made it look alot better than it was, It was one of those movies where the trailers show all the good parts, and leave you nothing left when you watch the film.

Did I just hear some negative comments about Dark Knight... Blasphemy!
Joking aside, I definitely agree that Cloverfield was one hell of a fun ride. The special effects were really well done and complimented the action, unlike a certain long-awaited sequel that hit theaters this sumer. I just have trouble enjoying Cloverfield at home. It's definitely a movie that shines in the theater. You get the whole crowd dynamic. In the theater, it was like a roller-coaster. At home, it's like the little rides outside of supermarkets. It's not the movie's fault or anything, it just kind of affects the longevity and how often I'll return to it.

On dvd Cloverfield would lose almost all its effectiveness, for sure. And I doubt it would be much fun to watch for a second time.

Yeah I agree with Cloverfield 2 not being fun to watch a second time, but if they shot it like a normal movie it might be good!

Jumper and Wanted would definately be on my worst list. No fortune telling looms for me. Or whiny heroes that take girls on vacation instead of running from Super Villains.
A agree, I really want to see Cloverfield style jump to a different genre. I love Blair Witch for pushing that style, and REC and Cloverfield really brought it to a new level, but I'd love to see it in something different.
TROSS, you can watch "Let the Right One In" on watch-movies.net ... it uses Mega Video which only lets you watch 72 minutes a day, but you can spread it out over two days. It's worth it and decent quality. The film is everything I ever wanted from a Vampire film. Artsy, chilling, dramatic, romantic, gothic, and "realistic" without turning vampires into virus patients. I was totally floored because no vampire film ever captured vamps the way I wanted, and this one nailed it. It's also a fantastic childhood drama.

Films I personally enjoyed most this year: 10. Rambo 9. Vantage Point 8. Quantum Of Solace 7. Wanted 6. Iron Man 5. Jumper 4. The Incredible Hulk 3. Beowulf (in 3-D) 2. The Dark Knight 1. Cloverfield It's also worth noting I probably only saw about 10 films this year, I'm usually a year behind (just watched Eastern Promises - highly recommended). WORST OF THE YEAR 2. Prom Night - Perhaps the worst big budget horror I've ever seen. 1. Indiana Jones 4 - Perhaps the biggest waste of talent and resources I've ever seen. If you guys can't remember everything you've watched, there's a great list of this year's films here - http://www.boxofficemojo.com/yearly/chart/?yr=2008&p=.htm

Ok, here's my list off the top of my head. Wall-E The Dark Knight Hellboy 2 Wanted Quantum of Solace Zack and Miri The Strangers Smart People The Killing of John Lennon Fermat's Room Man on Wire I realise that's 11 but I couldn't decide whether to drop Quantum or Hellboy 2. Although If pushed I'd probably choose Quantum over Hellboy since I already have an OTT fantasy action film up there (Wanted). Also of note is that I loved Pineapple Express but I dropped it in favour of Zack and Miri. Very similar movies but ZaM just takes it in my opinion. Also depending on your criteria Fermat's Room might not be eligable, it was released in Spain in 2007 but the US in 2008. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2008_in_film

Good films:
Cloverfield Dark Knight Zack and Miri Make a Porno Transporter 3 (I will stand firmly in the Stath's corner on that one!) Iron Man
I did not see as many films as I wanted to..
Worst films of the year:
Quantum of Solace - it still makes me angry to think about Saw 5 - not even hilariously funny like the last three were Indy 4 - never happened. Nope. Not a real film. Dunno what you're talking about. George Lucas was killed and replaced by a cat in a robot suit in 1985.

To be honest most films I've watched in the last twelve months have been classics I've been catching up on. Most of the articles I've written have been about movies not yet released. So don't know if I could single out ten new movies I've actually enjoyed

I'm always amazed how different our tastes are on this site, if Smart People and Quantum were to make any list for me, it would be top ten worst of 2008. I'm genuinely surprised to see them up here. Same with Wanted.
though, thank God, we're all in agreement on Indy 4 ... Sorry we lost you a reader Sheridan.

In my opinion, Smart People is like a theatre production, a play, if you will, where the acting is highlight. It got beat up on RT, sure, but I also love all Cameron Crowe movies and aside from Almost Famous, he hasn't gotten a lot of astounding reviews. THC(conincidence) FTW!! But like Christian I just haven't seen enough to make a great long list. My list is out of the movies that I've seen, and this year a lot other than what I've wanted to hasn't appealed to me. The last few movies I've seen recently are Breakfast at Tiffany's, Goodfellas and On the Waterfront. College got beat up probably more than any other movie I've seen reviewed this year. I hadn't even checked RT before I posted what I did, and now I feel sorry for the critics because I had the freedom of turning the movie off after the Theme Stated(5 Min), while they had to stay and watch the whole film. I know I'd be outside the theatre hitting on the teenage concession workers and getting kicked out by the manager than sit through that B.S. College tries to be a throwback to the teens-gone-wild films of the '80s, but now that teens can find far racier and far funnier fare than this on the Internet, these brainless movies have become obsolete. - Newsweek Film critics never come home stinking of their honest labor, but the nearest equivalent is covering something like College, which leaves its stain on one's very humanity. - Village voice http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/10008945-college/

My ten would be
10. The Strangers 9. Wanted 8. Pineapple Express 7. Cloverfield 6. Iron Man 5. Forgetting Sarah Marshall 4. Machine Girl 3. Wall E 2. Hellboy 2 1. Dark Knight
I'm fairly certain that Machine Girl was released this year. So much is wrong with it, but it such an absolute blast to watch. Strangers was another one which must be watched with a crowd that isn't ashamed to enjoy a horror movie. The ending could've used some work, though.

On the DVD that I have of 'Machine Girl' it's called 'Robogirl Revenge'
I like that title more I think.

At least with both titles you get a pretty good idea of what you're getting into.
