To call Spike Jonze's Where The Wild Things Are eagerly awaited is a serious understatement. The adaptation of Maurice Sendak's treasured children's book has had a publicly troubled journey to theatres, previously to be distributed by Universal, the film is now at Warner Brothers. There were a couple of re-castings, of the main character, Max, and KW, one of the Wild Things, well after entire performances had been recorded. Test screenings had children in floods of tears...
Filming began in early 2006, and now, tree years later, we have our first glimpse of official footage from the production. No dialogue, just Arcade Fire and some evocative imagery. It works.
I really love the way that this trailer sells the movie, it feels right. In the hands of Jonze it was never going to be like one of those garish Dr Seuss adaptations, but this really looks like something incredible, ET meets Into The Wild. For kids. Sort of. Indie directors taking on projects like this is looking to become a trend, with Wes Anderson taking on another beloved children's book The Fantastic Mr Fox.
