Historically 3D movies have mostly been confined to 3 genres; Documentary films, children's films and horror films. Quite why these three are the most prevalent is fairly easy to fathom (increased sense of 'being there', increased sense of wonder and increased spectacle respectively) what is not so obvious is why the recent boom in 3D movies have managed to avoid that third leg of the tripod. Well come January 16th the horror genre can be proudly included in the 3D canon once again.

We’ve seen a batch of horror franchises being tapped recently, and 2009 will be no exception. Along with bigger names like “Friday the 13th” will be “My Bloody Valentine 3-D,” based on 1980’s flick of the same name (but without the third dimension). The original film had the last surviving member of a mining accident awakening from his coma to slaughter dozens of folks on Valentine’s Day (the holiday being the day on which the accident happened).

This “3-D” release won’t be as much a remake as taking place in the same universe. It’ll find the man whose negligence caused the accident returning to town ten years later, only to find young people dropping like flies again on Valentine’s Day. Is there a new killer on the loose, or has the original slasher risen from the dead?

The movie looks like a fairly standard slasher remake, just now it's in 3D. I'm sure we'll get lots of kills with spears impaling people pointed directly at the audience etc.

Some of the best loved 3D movies of all time are horror movies (Friday the 13th part 3, Jaws 3D, House of Wax etc.) so if they play their cards right, this movie could go down in history.
