Earlier this morning I read a comment from a reader begging for an update on the follow up to The Dark Knight (Batman 3? Not sure what to call it…), so here you go.

Despite the fact that director Chris Nolan has been making some noises indicating he’s not sure he wants to do a third Batman movie the rumor mill is saying that it’s a done deal and he will indeed return.

A while back, in regards to a third movie Nolan said:

“Maybe there’s so much expectation to them. But I wouldn’t want to do one if it weren’t going to be as good as the first or second. That’s not respectful to the fans.”

This was in reference to the fact that generally speaking, the third film in a series (the second sequel?) is quite often inferior to the first two films - and he is leery of going there.

However according to E! Online the next film in the series is definitely on track:

“Despite some recent interviews in which he down-played the possibility of returning as director again, Christopher Nolan (who helmed Knight) will for sure be back directing the third flick, we’re assured by a production mole. Christian Bale will obviously rejoin his director pal, and we’re very pleased to report that he’ll be playing a ’sexier’ Bruce Wayne. This is heaven-sent news, as, let’s face it, Bale couldn’t have looked any more constipated in that last flick.”

“…certain Warners sources are leaking to us that Rachel Weisz is being considered for the Catwoman role”

This makes me super happy!

Catwoman has already been done, extremely well, in what people forget was a pretty realistic fashion in Batman Returns. There are so many other characters to choose from, why go back to this one? Catwoman is a familiar character, but she is dull.

I think if they do the whole Catwoman thing, they'll probably make her basically like Charles Bronson from the Death Wish movies.  Just another vigilante, except not as super-cool and extra-manly as Batman.

This whole article, despite its attempts to be legitimate, still strikes me as wishful thinking and not entirely based on what's actually going on at Warner Bros.

Yeah, folks just don't want to admit this film is so far away.

Sheridan, in regards to Catwoman, I think this new series completely ignores anything that came before and I think most fans at this point feel the same way. As much I I love Pfeifer in leather, I think Catwoman is the only choice left to go for a new villain. Since it was a trilogy that directly links in building theme and character motivation, going from the Joker (who is the philosophical antitheses of Batman) to The Riddler (who rocks, but is just a quirky villain who is pretty much a tamed version of Joker) just wouldn't work. I can't think of another villain that isn't more than a thug or a monster. or a geek with a grudge. Catwoman, being female and a vigilante, really questions the core of what Batman is. Unlike the Batman Wannabes in Dark Knight, she's cool, calculated, and good at her job. But he has to stop her from doing the exact same thing that he's doing himself. I think there's a lot more story potential there.

But Nolan might have Mr. Freeze up his sleeve and you know what, he'd probably pull it off.

I was against The Joker being redone after Jack Nicholson did such a good job but I was wrong, so I'm open for any character to return.

How about Jack Black as The Penquin?

That would be a major challenge for Jack Black, it would give him an oppritunity to break out of the roles we normally see him do.

And like Dalmatianjaws said, this film is so very far away!! And I too would like to see what Nolan could do with Mr. Freeze!

Exactly, when an actor plays against type they always do so much better.  Escpecially comedians - Jim Carrey in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Robin Williams in Insomnia, Lee Evans in Freeze Frame.  Give Jack Black the kind of role where he can be manic but in a way which would add to the character and be menacing I think he could pull it off.  As for Mr. Freeze, it would take an actor of great talent to erase the memory of Arnie... chill out!

Implying I haven't remained excited since the credits rolled on TDK.

Catwoman has already been done, extremely well

Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy, no. That character hasn't REMOTELY been done justice. I'd be surprised if Nolan went in that direction though, what with literally everyone assuming they know who the villains are.
