The very last time we wrote about Super Troopers 2 was in May of 2007, more than a year ago. At the time, Broken Lizard member Paul Soter said that Super Troopers 2 had been put on hold. Since then we haven't heard a word about the sequel at all, but with Broken Lizard's newest comedy Slammin' Salmon premiering at Slamdance in January, new updates are finally starting to arrive. MovieWeb spoke with Jay Chandrasekhar recently who mentioned that "we are currently in the process of writing Super Troopers 2." While that's a step in the right direction, he added that it doesn't mean it's actually happening.

"The best thing for us to do is sit down and write the movie. And then we can say, 'Here it is.' And we'll see what happens from there," Chandrasekhar told MovieWeb. That means, like Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds (which took 7 years to finally get written), it's just a matter of actually finishing a script that everyone likes, and that still make take time. As for the story in the sequel, while fellow Broken Lizard member Paul Soter and Chandrasekhar seemed to be joking at first, this is the general idea.

"The big picture is that we are on the Canadian Border. And in reality, what has happened is that the government has found places where the markers were off, or wrong. And there are these areas of land that were thought to be Canada, but are actually part of the US. We are enlisted to patrol this area that was always thought to be Canadian soil. But no, it is actually the United States. We are enlisted because they have to send someone there to help make it part of the US territory now. We get recruited to be the highway patrolmen there. And we are surrounded by all of these Canadian people that aren't happy about this. We essentially have to impose US law on a bunch of Canadians that aren't at all happy about it."

In the minds of Broken Lizard, that plot sounds it like has some potential. Or at least it reminds me a lot of John Candy's Canadian Bacon. I do know I'm not the only one that's still anxious to one day see a Super Troopers sequel, even though the original film first came out back in 2001. I'm a big Broken Lizard fan and the guys seem to have disappeared recently. Hopefully the premiere of Slammin' Salmon will give them the energy they need to finish the Super Troopers 2 script and get it made. Even with that ridiculous plot they described (if it is indeed accurate), I'm definitely up for seeing them reprise their state trooper roles!
