Johnny Depp and Sean Penn are funny guys when the occasion calls for it, once in a while, but are they Three Stooges funny? Rumor has it that the Farrelly Brothers think so, and they're planning to cast the pair of Oscar-nominated actors as Moe (Depp) and Larry (Penn) in their upcoming remake of one of many classic Stooges films.

The project was officially announced months ago, but today In Touch Magazine floated the rumors of Depp and Penn being on board (as reported at the link by Just Jared). Film Drunk adds to the rumor mill with a report that voice actor Billy West is meeting with Penn to help him with his Larry impression.

So... can this actually be real? There's more than enough room for this to all be nonsense, and I wouldn't be surprised to start seeing official rebuttals tomorrow. But as bizarre as the idea of this whole thing sounds, it could also be kind of mind-blowing. The real question is, what actor has the guts to join these two as Curly? Robert Downey Jr.? Jim Carrey, if he promises to be good again?

It's worth noting that this isn't the first set of rumors to go around-- Hollywood Elsewhere reported on Benicio del Toro and Russell Crowe as possible Stooges back in November. So will we put every actor in Hollywood on this list before the Farrellys finally settle on Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson, and, I don't know, Haley Joel Osment? Probably. But that's the fun of the rumor mill, isn't it?

This could be funny, i could honestly see both of them doing this and doing a good job. What does everyone else think?
