Here is some info I found.... Despite the endless rumors over the last few months, it never really seemed like Scream 4 was a movie that would actually happen. Haven't we moved so far beyond that kind of cheeky send-up that horror fans wouldn't even recognize it any more? But apparently they're still making progress on getting this together, and Bloody Disgusting has it from a reliable (but anonymous) source that lots of the original main players would return for it. Kevin Williamson, who wrote the first two films, is apparently working on a draft that may or may not wind up as the final screenplay, and Wes Craven is likely to return, though maybe not as director. Even Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox and David Arquette are in negotiations to make cameos. The movie, of course, will focus on a "younger generation," given that the original main characters are no longer young or nubile enough to be the leads in a horror movie. I still think nothing can really top the original Scream, particularly the endless sequels, and don't see a need for this one except as a nostalgia trip. But hey, that's why no one pays me the big bucks to decide what a studio should do. At least a potential Scream 4 seems willing to honor the movies that came before it, which is more than you can say for most of the horror sequels that pop up these days. I enjoyed all the Scream movies, even the last one. Hopefully this one will live up. I won't expect anything as good as the first one, but still fingers are crossed for something enjoyable.

Gotta agree with you on this one, T. Ross. The whole meta thing has been way played out for several years now. And Kevin Williamson, who was hurled to fame based on the series, is now pretty much proved himself to be pretty much a one-trick pony when it comes to writing horror movies . . .
On the other hand, ANYTHING would be better than the continuous onslaught of shitty remakes currently raining down upon us like a Biblical plague.

Oh its some great stuff. Especially if you did grow up on the original slasher films like I did. For that I will definitely give Williamson credit for -- He really knew his slasher films. The only way I can figure them doing this one currently is to revolve new murders around on an unnecessary remake of STAB . . . Actually that's not too bad of an idea.

That is not a bad idea, I would like to see that played out.

If Kevin Williamson still had the same sense of irony that he had in 1996 then that'd be a great idea. Remakes have gotten way out of hand. As long as this doesn't resemble Scream 3 in any way

The fundamental thing they really messed up with number 3 (amongst everything else) was the tone. They forgot what made the first two so appealing and made something that resembled Scooby Doo. Wes Craven directed that so I really hope he backtracks to what the series was, because if it's played as kooky comedy and throws all logic out the window as the third one did, I'm going to be rather not happy.

I agree, Scream 3 relied too much on the comedy aspect (a Jay & Silent Bob cameo?!) that the horror really suffered, then the dumb ending where we find out that the villain in this movie was responsible for the killers in the first film... smelt of desperation

Yeah, I liked going "back to the beginning" but it was cheap to make it an all new character that had NOTHING to do with the earlier films. The third one was more spoof. the great thing about Scream is that while it was self referential it also was scary. Drew Barrymore's opening is really kind of chilling. And while the dialog and movie self-awareness is pretty strong ... it also fits the world he created and within that world, as silly as it is, he still wrote a damn good slasher.
If they do this is really needs to have a self aware twist of being the "upteenth" remake ... but it really can't skimp on the chills.

The funny thing about a slasher homage being my first actual slasher film is that, while I wasn't allowed to watch those kinds of films growing up, I was allowed free reign of the local library. So I read all the books about those films, so I totally got the references. And like all horror fans that are used to a killer being able to warp to places far apart in short amounts of time, I was TOTALLY taken with the "two killer" twist. It was intersting watching it with non horror fans that were like, " of course it was two killers ... if you think about it logically ..."
Hilarious. Damn, why don't I own that movie?

Nobody think it's two killers because 99% of the time in movies the killer is not logical, and the things he did/the coincidences that happen impossible. You don't know that the film will be logical until it's over.
I didn't like the ending of Scream 2 by the way, it didn't work for me. Such a shame because right up until they hit that stage it had been pure gold.

Homestly I never really liked the Scream films at all, the first one was a good movie, but I just wasnt that into it, but a fourth one does spark some intrest in me. I would like it to be straight horror though, a bloody mess.

I think the first film was the only one that had a great ending. The problem with the sequels was that the killer turned to be none of the original cast members but instead Sidney's long-lost-cousin's-dentist's-barber's-brother-in-law-half-brother who had only the most tenuous of connections to the murders.
