The Green Hornet - Really didn't work for me. I thought Seth Rogen was going to play it fairly straight, that was the hype - but he might as well be his character out of Pineapple Express. In fact, the movie felt a lot like Pineapple Express but with James Franco replaced by a guy who was struggling to talk. Cameron Diaz was com-plete-ly wasted (not drunk). And I can see why Nicolas Cage dropped out of the villain role, because it sucks and his death is embarrassing. There are definitely a few laughs and some great lines from Rogen sprinkled around, but Rogen hogged too much screentime, too much wasted time story wise, and the falling out with Kato was pointless. Also Rogen's character acts like a dick throughout, especially toward his father's newspaper. The villain politician is supposed to be evil because he wants to "write the news", Rogen KILLS him, but throughout Rogen is writing the news, marching in and demanding they bump up unwarranted coverage for The Green Hornet. Basically, this is a comedy because the whole idea is too crap to work as drama.

Super 8 - first movie in the theater since Thor so I was in withdrawal.  That said, this movie is a total blast but ultimately fails to reach the level of all the films it is a homage to ... or blatantly rips off. There are multiple story threads ripped from Spielberg films and a few mimicked shots. They are:

E.T. - an alien that wants to go home and makes things float around and form into a contraption in order to do so.

Close Encounters - man no one will believe dealing with a government cover-up that creates a fake disaster to evacuate citizens so they can deal with the alien. Also, a stolen shot where a maintenance truck from the power company drives down the road at the bottom of frame with a starry sky above him.

Goonies - gang of kids in an underground (sometimes literally) adventure while the grown ups are unaware.

Indiana Jones - the dad is captured and somehow manages to beat up a trained military officer, then swaps uniforms and sneaks out of the compound by blowing up trucks.

Jurassic Park - power company worker is fixing lines when the creature arrives. He's up amidst the trees, which begin to shake, and the shot is framed so that the power lines look like the electric fence lines from Jurassic Park. Also, the creature sounds like a T-Rex and thumps the ground when he walks.

Poltergeist - a bunch of items float trough the air, one of them is a lamp that turns on as it flies by.

All in all, it was a really fun flick that's ultimately forgettable.

Withnail and I - I've adored this movie for quite a while and finally bought it. Utterly brilliant. I think it was my third viewing before I realized he literally threw his talent to the wolves.

You get all those movies in one? Sounds like good value.

Along very similar lines, Paul - Waay better than I expected. Nicely handled in every respect. Whoever chose and edited the promotional clips should be shot. Everyone in that cast could crack a good joke. Strangely over-the-top anti-God message though.

Apocalypse Now: Redux was cool. It's nice when a classic can surprise you, even though its such a huge part of pop culture and could easily lose it's weight before you get around to seeing it. I started watching Sons of Anarchy because there are NO shows for me to watch until Breaking Bad is back.

Not when you can rent those movies for the same price as a ticket to Super 8.

You're not the first person I've heard say this. Gives me hope as I love those two guys. Also, the ani-God stuff seems at an all time high these days, I find it quite annoying. Even if you agree with the message it's usually delivered in a very negative way which is distracting when you're trying to enjoy something.

Hot Rod! What a little gem that movie turned out to be. Dance-punch sequence anyone? Smiley

Hot Tub Time Machine - still love it. Great White Buffalo.

Doctor Who Season 5 - eps 1, 2, and 4 are amazing. Ep. 3 is a piece of shit.

Agreed, that Dalek episode sucked. Best episodes Matt Smith has done:

"The Eleventh Hour"
"Amy's Choice"
"Vincent and the Doctor"
"The Lodger"
"The Pandorica Opens"

"Space"
"Time"

"The Impossible Astronaut"
"Day of the Moon"
"The Curse of the Black Spot"
"The Doctor's Wife"
"A Good Man Goes to War"

Yeah, perfect concept for the restrictions placed upon them by the format too.

I tried to get into the re-launch of Doctor Who and watched the first series with Chris Eccleston in, which was enjoyable in a silly way but as much as i don't mind David Tennant i just found him far too 'Theatery' for me, i kept expecting him to shout to the camera 'Oh No i Didn't'!. Hope he's been reigned in for Fright Night but i doubt it.

And as for the latest guy, does his mum know he's acting? too young for me even if they do dress him in tweed.

After watching all Tennant's episodes I firmly believe it's one of those "perfect actor, perfect role" scenarios, like Day Lewis in There Will Be Blood or William Shatner in Star Trek or Marlon Brando in Last Tango in Paris or Tommy Lee Jones in The Fugitive or Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones.

He's definately theatrical, but it fits his doctor's story arc. And holy shit, the last line he ever utters is HEART BREAKING.

Matt Smith is phenomenal but his season 5 (thus far) seems to be focusing a lot more on the sex, drugs, and rock and roll side of the character. His physicality is great, maybe even better than Tennants.

To be fair, you're not wrong in your take on it. The whole show is very "over the top" especially with the Doctor who is larger than life, time, and space. It took me a bit to get used to as well.

Re-watched The Apartment, love that movie. Seriously, seriously brilliant. Saw Bonnie & Clyde for the first time and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Fright Night (2011) - embargoed until August 18th. But I will say this, I'll be revising my best vampire movies list.

Quite the opposite, the abundant food and alcohol made me suspicious. But I'd have to say it's FAR superior to the original story-wise, though overdependent on CGI as all modern films are. Still, at this point I'd call it the best film I've seen in the theater this year, hands down. It doesn't take itself too seriously and aside from a few questionable character moments it's a very smart script.
