I'm cramming my way through movies to write up the 20 most excellent films of the year so far. Have either of you two seen The Raid? Do you guys have any recommendations for the list?

The Raid is nothing short of a masterpiece. I'm not a huge martial arts fan, but this one had me in the palm of its hand. Theater gasped and applauded more than once during the movie, it was great.
I haven't seen Beasts of the Southern Wild but reviewers and two folks whose opinion I respect really adored it.
Safety Not Guaranteed has been touted by the likes of Patton Oswalt and Brad Bird on Twitter ... though I haven't seen it yet either.
Avengers (of course) should be on there ... what else ...

Moonrise Kingdom was marvelous, probably my second favorite this year behind The Raid ... Woman in Black was strong, not perfect, but some truly masterful moments in there ... Haven't seen Chronicle or The Grey, but a lot of folks loved those ... OH, Cabin in the Woods, let's not forget that ... Here's a similar list that Badass did: http://badassdigest.com/2012/07/01/2012-halftime-the-ten-best-so-far/

Really haven't seen a lot this year. Avengers, Moonrise Kingdom, Young Adult, Chronicle and Martha Marcy May Marlene are probably the best I have. Haywire and Shame were alright. Another checklist for ya, it updates as he sees stuff: http://www.ultraculture.co.uk/best-of-2012

Chronicle, The Grey and Shame I've watched in my marathon so far. All are good, all have issues, all are on the list. I've realised 20 movies is a lot half way through the year, especially when it hasn't been a great half year. Martha Marcy is classed as last year by U.S. release dates. Woman In Black I'm going to watch tomorrow. Cabin In The Woods and The Raid will be on the list. It'll be pretty mainstream as usual, with a couple of good geek feature docs.
Is Haywire good? The reviews from users on iTunes, wow, they hate it. (see 'Chart' thread)
Has anyone seen Aardman's Pirates! In An Adventure With Scientists? (U.S. title is different)
Somebody give me a couple more lines summing up what's good about Moonrise Kingdom and Brave as I probably won't get to see them.

So don't disqualify festival season late releases like MMMM!

I've always done lists by US release date as we have more American readers and movies tend to start their runs over there. It came out in October 2011 otherwise I'd put it on, no agenda.

Moonrise Kingdom Wes Anderson borrows the best parts of his previous work to weave a tale of young love and innocence that's easily the most emotional of all his films. Shot on Super 16 film, it has a magical sense of nostalgia and boasts great performances from Bill Murray, Edward Norton, Francis McDormand, and Bruce Willis, not to mention the two child stars that steal the show.
Brave While not the best story Pixar has to offer, Brave is visually stunning, representing some of their finest animation to date. The corny first act gives way to a darker, cleverer second act twist that (luckily) remained unspoiled by Disney's marketing department.

At least allow Young Adult then.

Y would one be ok and not the other? I'd have to list stuff like The Muppets. You're asking to open Pandora's box.

Young Adult opened mid-December, limited release in the US though, the Muppets was a month before, wide.

Dalmatian Jaws is going to hate me for one of the movies going on the list. Watched it this evening.
Also just watched Woman In Black. Good, but didn't take it to a higher level of fright. Very by-the-book. Also the Woman In Black seemed to be played by five different people. And Daniel Radcliffe had about 20 lines in the whole movie - Filming must have been three months of him creeping down a corridor.
