Dredd - Very good. Most brutal movie I've seen in quite a while. Alex Garland is a solid scriptwriter. Some great mouth acting that really invokes the comic art.

21 Jump Street - Pretty damn good. Howl's Moving Castle - Possibly my favorite Miyazaki movie. Beyond the Black Rainbow - Disappointing. Handsome, but unengaging.

21 Jump Street - Haven't heard a single bad thing, REALLY want to see it. Howl's Moving Castle - It's so damn good, right? Beyond the Black Rainbow - I had that vibe from the trailer. Worth a rent though?
The Master - magnificent. Absolutely perfect for the first half, though the second half loses its focus I felt ... threads together at least three big themes (instead of There Will Be Blood's simple deconstruction of wayward capitalism), which makes it at once less perfect yet more commendable. Despite being on the fence about the final half, I can't deny its power. I've been thinking about it all damn day. It's haunting.

Glengarry Glenn Ross - maybe two plot turns the entire movie and yet it plays out like a thriller. Phenomenal film.
Deadwood Season 2 - great, great, great

Yeah, 21 Jump Street was a pleasant surprise. One of the things I love about HMC is just how damn Miyazaki it is. There are elements of everything else he's done in it. I would hesitate to recommend Black Rainbow, but it may click with you as a horror fan more than it did me. I wish they'd done a better job with the script.
Looking forward to seeing The Master.

Dr. No - so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so boring.
Diamonds are Forever - so, so, so, so, so, so, so ridiculous.
The Grey - great plane crash scene, but the rest is utterly pointless.

Yeah I was underwhelmed by The Grey. Neeson is great but the story is too basic. The Edge (similar movie) had a lot more going on.

Still need to see The Grey, I think I'll like it. Side By Side - Solidified my opinion on digital versus film, but not right away. Provided a lot of food for thought, really enjoyable doc. Lawless - Solid and enjoyable but frustratingly straightforward when it's all said and done as it was so close to being really good. Great acting from the entire cast, although a few of the characters don't have a lot of growth. Sixteen Candles - John Hughes. I was going to take notes as I went and stockpile them. I get two at a time in the mail.
Cool, I already own them, I have no excuse!

Cabin in the Woods - still great, but that slow twist is so damn awesome the first time around it's tough to lose it on repeat viewings.
On Her Majesty's Secret Service - Oh so bad. Not just a bad Bond movie, it was one of the most boring movies I've ever seen!
The Spy Who Loved Me - Stupid as crap but the most entertaining pre-Craig Bond that I've watched. Jaws is an awesome, ridiculous character.
Supernatural: Season 7 - suffering from the same stuff later seasons of X-Files suffered from. The standalone episodes are very good but the overarching story is now balls.

Lockout - 20 minutes in - Urgh, pacing of this thing is horrible, too sped up. And they've treated me to the worst visual fx chase I've ever seen. Guy Pearce cannot get laughs with the one liners, they cast the wrong guy. With his disastrous performance in Prometheus and the utter cartoon of a character he's created for Lawless, this could be, on a skill level, the worst year for an actor I've ever witnessed.
Anyway, still 1 hour 10 minutes to go.

I haven't seen Lawless, so fair dos. But from the clips he looks to me like a character out of Who Framed Roger Rabbit.
I'm now 40 minutes into Lockout. It's got better. The villains have appeared and they're quite watchable. The pacing has improved a bit. He's still no Snake Plissken.

Set the bar to nostalgia heights why don't you. Not seen Lockout, but it did look like a throwaway bit of fun, maybe you need more beer and pizza to watch it than you're currently running on. You're not entirely wrong about the OTT performance in Lawless, but I defy you not to find it effective in context.

There is no beer or pizza in me currently. Unless he can better the performance of Kurt Russell he should not have taken the role. Every new film must be better than all previous films, that is my rule of cinema.

The Dictator - Pretty good. Some very edgy humour. Not one I'd be especially keen to rewatch (unlike, say, Hot Tub Time Machine). Very short - Feels like it's building up to the finale from the 16th minute. I wonder if the character wouldn't have been more fun staying in charge of his country and creating various mishaps rather than being down and out almost immediately and falling in love with a woman in a health food store.
