Could this the first picture of Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter?

This picture has been spreading across the Internet like wild fire, but as it is not an officially released picture, many are questioning its authenticity.  Is it the real deal?  Or could it be two pictures of Johnny Depp as Edward Scissorhands and Sweeny Todd photoshoped together?  You decide.

The Pirates of the Caribbean actor, currently starring in Tim Burton’s adaptation of Alice in Wonderland, joins an all star cast including Burton’s other half, Helena Bonham Carter, Alan Rickman, Anne Hathaway, and Matt Lucas.  Australian actress Mia Wasikowska has been cast as Alice.

The movie is being filmed  in England, and is set to be released in 2010.

I reckon it's real. It's too inventive to be fan art.

I love Tim Burton's style but this in my opinion is just bad.
I could see this as a halloween costume for Carrot Top, not Johnny Depp's character.

From the images of Alice and now this, I think everyone is surprised it doesn't look like a live action version of the Disney cartoon version we have in our minds. It seems a deliberate attempt to carve out its own territory and I guess one has to admire the production for that. It's becoming quite a fascinating prospect.

Somehow I've only just noticed there's a rabbit under his arm. Or a hare rather.

I really dig this style,  actually. I've always loved Burton's look even if I havn't liked his scripts.

Maybe the disney version of Alice in Wonderland I watched way too much as a child made me expect something similar. This picture was quite a surprise, not at all what I was expecting, although I suppose I should have expected it from Burton. The more I think about it and look at the picture the more I am starting to like the look, not so much the crazy orange hair or eye make-up though..
Im definitely interested to see how this progresses.

Looks photoshopped to me

I dont think it is photoshopped, he has been working with Burton a while now on this film.

It looks photoshopped.  I think this was either fanart or tossed away concept art.

If it is, then it is a damn good job. I can kind of see a resemblence in his face to Edward Scissor Hands.

I actually think this image looks better than the one of Robert Downey Jr. in Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes.  Just remembering that makes me shudder with fear at the disasterous potential of that film.

As for a caption, I offer up:

"Johnny Depp hanging out at home on his day off".

So Angel Orona, so are saying that you are not excited for Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes film?

Hey Man:

I have nothing against Guy Ritchie but I'm just concerned that his Red-Bull-fueled camerawork isn't gonna mesh with Old World Victorian England.

That is funny and true though. I hope he takes a different approach with this film, his normal style wouldnt fit with well with your typical Sherlock Holmes film.
