With Paramount having allowed its property rights to "Tomb Raider" (read: Lara Croft) to lapse, Warner Brothers has scooped them up in what could be a complete reboot of the series. As of yet no writer, director or star has been attached. However it does seem unlikely that Angelina Jolie (who played Croft in both Paramount's LARA CROFT: TOMB RAIDER and its sequel LARA CROFT: THE CRADLE OF LIFE) will be approached to reprise the character. This of course means that we will soon be inundated with rampant P.R. claims of "hot young actress" ________________________ being in "serious negotiations" to fill Lara's tight fitting cargo shorts.
I've always felt female action heroes haven't been given much of a chance. They've been either let down by the material (the all-over-the-map DOMINO) or the audience (the seriously underrated LONG KISS GOODNIGHT). So I had pretty high hopes for the success of the LARA CROFT series. Unfortunately the first film came across as nothing more than a big-budget INDIANA JONES knockoff and its sequel was so lackluster that even a lust-worthy Angelina donning the previously-mentioned tight fitting cargo shorts couldn't rescue it.
Here's hoping Warner Brother excavation of this series will result hidden treasure instead of more cinematic wreckage.
Also sorely in need of a "do-(me)-over"
